IDW Publishing has announced the second installment of the comics series Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents will be none other than Godzilla’s The Odyssey. Written by Frank Tieri with art by Ilias Kyriazis, the book will reimagine Homer‘s epic with Poseidon unleashing Toho’s more evil kaiju to thwart Odysseus’s long voyage home, and Zeus sending Godzilla to aid him in response.
Tieri states, “The Odyssey is hands down one of the greatest stories ever told in history. I mean, it has everything… the Trojan War, vicious sea monsters, angry gods, enchanting sirens, devious witches, a cyclops with vision problems, etc. But there is one thing clearly missing… and that’s Godzilla. After all, Godzilla makes every story better, even this one, am I right?”
He teases the other kaiju who’ll be making appearances, stating “part of the fun of this book was jamming as many familiar faces from the Godzilla-verse in there, so plan on seeing Rodan, Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Destoroyah, and plenty of others you won’t see coming. Toss out everything you know about Greek history and come join us on our GODyssey, if you will. Trust me… you won’t be sorry. (Though Odysseus might be, granted.)”
Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents is a four-part spin-off of Tom Scioli‘s 2024 literary mash-up, that will begin with Adam Tierney and Sean Peacock‘s Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla on April 8. Godzilla’s The Odyssey will follow on June 10, and retail at 48 pages for $7.99. Each issue will feature a serialized back-up by Scioli, “Godzilla vs. Robin Hood.”
Christopher Nolan‘s more conventional film version of The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and many more, will follow into theaters on July 17. In the meantime, you can check out a preview of the comic, and its variant covers below.
