Dynamite Entertainment today announced plans to release a 2025 Gargoyles Winter Special, bringing a little festive spirit to the world of Disney’s beloved animated series. Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman teams with veteran writer/editor Nate Cosby to bring the story to life, and George Kambadais (The Flash) returns to the world of Gargoyles on art. Due out in December, Gargoyles Winter Special 2025 #1 will ship with covers by Kambadais, Jae Lee, Roger Langridge, and Alessandro Ranaldi.

The story will center on an unsolved crime that has haunted Elisa Maza — NYPD detective and girlfriend of the Gargoyle Goliath — for years. Broadway hopes to help her close out the cold case, but it won’t be that simple…in part because of his “assistants,” Bronx and the bull terrier Lance (first seen in last year’s Winter Special).

“Having Broadway put the trench coat and fedora back on to solve a mystery is going to be a ton of fun,” said writer and franchise creator Greg Weisman. “Throw in Bronx and Lance, and the emotional heft that Elisa brings to this unsolved case from her past is just icing on the cake!”

Per the official announcement, “This unlikely trio of crime solvers return to the scene of Elisa’s case, and begin to uncover an incredible mystery that will affect not just Elisa, but every member of the Gargoyles cast!”

Editor and co-writer Nate Cosby added, “I had an itch to do a holiday mystery, and I’m SO glad that Greg reminded me that Broadway LOVES detective shows (as seen in the classic Gargoyles episode, ‘Silver Falcon’). We’re embracing the pulpy nature of classic crime stories, full of seedy suspects, switcheroos, and a jaw-dropping reveal that nobody (especially Broadway) will see coming!”

Gargoyles launched as an animated series from Walt Disney Television Animation in 1994, and aired on Disney-owned ABC as well as in syndication until it ended in 1997. The 78-episode run was a critical- and fan-favorite, and made enough of a splash that in addition to toys and a collectible card game, the first five episodes were recut into a feature film and released direct-to-video in 1995 as Gargoyles the Movie: The Heroes Awaken

The characters have appeared in comics numerous times since the launch of the cartoon, with the very first being in Disney Adventures magazine, in which the Gargoyles comics were edited by The Beat‘s own Heidi MacDonald. Weisman was only peripherally involved with those stories, as was also the case with a run at Marvel in 1995, which ended after 11 issues.

Later, the property landed at Slave Labor Graphics in 2006, where Weisman was not only in complete control, but retconned the third season of the TV show out of continuity. That series ran until SLG lost the license in 2008. As Skybound has done with Transformers and G.I. Joe, Dynamite has expressed interest in collecting the Marvel and SLG comics at some point, bringing most of the characters’ print history under one roof.

Gargoyles Winter Special 2025 #1 will arrive in comic book stores in December.
