Following a successful Kickstarter campaign with artist Lylian, Sweeney Boo‘s Eat, and Love Yourself is being released as an original graphic novel from BOOM! Studios in April 2020. Today, The Beat can reveal an exclusive first look at three of the book’s interior pages, which give us a brief look at the start of the protagonist’s journey.
Eat, and Love Yourself follows Mindy, a young woman living with an eating disorder who struggles with her sense of self-worth. When Mindy accidentally discovers a magical item that allows her to revisit every part of her past — including the painful mistakes, lost relationships, and more — she starts to believe that she can fix everything. Her hope is that fixing the past will allow her to get her life back on track, but as any story about a magical item will tell you, revisiting the past isn’t about fixing things — it’s about gaining a new perspective.
In this deeply personal journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, Mindy learns to re-evaluate her experiences so that she can live fully in the present and truly love herself, no matter what she looks like.
When BOOM! announced Eat, and Love Yourself in June, Sweeney Boo said in a statement, “Working on Eat, and Love Yourself is a true healing experience for me. I suffered from an eating disorder in my early twenties, and while I was working on myself and getting better, I discovered how taboo and difficult of a subject it was to talk about. This book is for everyone who has a difficult relationship with their body, or just themselves… I want to show everyone that they’re beautiful the way they are.”
