On Tuesday, Clover Press launched the Kickstarter campaign for Ricardo Delgado’s Vampyre: A Horror Folktale, a bilingual, illustrated prose novel that’s part traditional folk tale, part autobiography, set in the same world as his Dracula of Transylvania in 1940s Costa Rica. Within the hours, the campaign raised more than 10 times its initial goal of $1 thousand.

Vampyre follows a small Costa Rican town in the wake of a series of gruesome murders perpetrated by a terrifying monster. The supernatural story is set in the same town where Delgado’s parents grew up. The hardcover book will feature historical maps, creature designs, and photos to compose a multimedia project drawing from classic horror and Delgado’s own life.

“This is a very personal story for me, and it’s dedicated to my parents,” said Delgado in a statement.

“Part folktale. Part autobiography. This gruesome novel is a captivating celebration of urban legends, horror stories and the power they hold over us,” said Clover Press publisher Hank Kanalz. “Inspired by elements of the classic 1980s illustrated novella Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King and Berni Wrightson, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Costa Rican folklore, Delgado weaves his family history into an ambitious new multimedia mythology that must be seen and read to be believed.”

Vampyre: A Horror Folktale is live on Kickstarter until February 13 at 12 a.m. ET.
