Marvel Comics has announced it will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original Civil War crossover with Civil War: Unmasked, a five-issue series by Christos Gage, Edgar Salazar, and original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell. The comic will offer a different story in each issue, respectively revealing more of what Tony Stark/Iron Man, Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Bill Foster/Goliath, Greer Nelson/Tigra, and Steve Rogers/Captain America did during the 2006 event.

Per the press release, the first issue will kick things off “with an urgent mission from Bishop, that takes Tony Stark into the ‘Days of Future Past’ timeline, where the revelation of the apocalyptic future changes everything Tony thought he knew about the consequences of the Superhuman Registration Act.”
Gage states, “In 2006, I was a rookie comic book writer when a short delay in the production of the epic Civil War event limited series led to me being offered the one-shot Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War. It was my first really high profile project at Marvel, a big hit, and 20 years later, they still haven’t managed to get rid of me! So it’s a thrill and an honor to revisit that troubled time with Civil War: Unmasked, in which I have the privilege of joining with brilliant artist Edgar Salazar and trend-setting original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell to reveal never-before-told stories from that milestone event!”
Created by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, Civil War saw the superhero community become divided over a superhuman registraton act, leading to Iron Man becoming the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Spider-Man revealing his secret identity to the world, and the death of Goliath, as well as the subsequent assassination of Steve Rogers (who opposed the act) in Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting‘s Captain America run. It was adapted into the 2016 MCU film Captain America: Civil War, and received a sequel that same year by Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez.
Issue #1 of Unmasked will be released on May 6, with a main cover by Geoff Shaw, and a variant by McNiven himself. In the meantime, the new Iron Man series by Joshua Williamson and Carmen Carnero will begin on January 28.
