BOOM! Studios has announced they have acquired the comic book rights for Jem and the Holograms, the animated 1985-88 TV series owned by Hasbro. The publisher will release a new series in 2026, as well as reprints of the previous comics, the first volume of will be available to pre-order through Kickstarter in November.

Michael Kelly, Publisher of BOOM! Studios, and the former Vice President of Global Publishing at Hasbro, says, “I was part of the team that brought Jem and the Holograms back to comics in 2015, and saw first-hand the positive impact our stories had on a broad and diverse community of readers. I could not be happier than to be working with Jerrica, Kimber, Stormer and the rest of the group (yeah, even Pizzazz) once again.”

Created by Christy Marx for Hasbro, Marvel, and Sunbow Productions (the home of other ’80s cartoons based on Hasbro toy lines like G.I. Joe and The Transformers), Jem and the Holograms revolved around Jerrica Benton, a music manager who leads a secret double life as rock star Jem, an alter-ego created by the holographic computer her late father built. Together with her band, she fought to protect rival bands from uncovering the tech behind her secret, and protected the foster children in their care.

The first comic series was created by Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell, and debuted at IDW Publishing in 2015, back when it held the license for G.I. Joe, Transformers, and more Hasbro properties. Thompson’s run, which ended in 2017, and featured art by many more (including Jen Bartel, Meredith McClaren, and Savanna Ganucheau), will be collected in its entirety in BOOM!’s first hardcover, Jem and the Holograms: Truly Outrageous Comic Collection. The announcement coincides with the show’s 40th anniversary, and a new line of dolls released by The Loyal Subjects, as well as an EP by Jem’s singing voice, Britta Phillips.

  1. The original was really good! Not a surprise, we all know what Kelly Thompson has been up to since. Highly recommend checking it out if you missed it the first time around.
