BAtman #1 2nd printing
Batman #1 2nd printing cover

Batman #1 is a hit.

The Matt Fraction/Jorge Jiménez version of Batman (with colors by Tomeu Morey and lettering by Clayton Cowles) has sold 500,000 copies, as announced by DC this morning.

The PR for this doesn’t mention if this is sell-in the comics shops or sell-through to readers, but it’s an impressive number either way. If only we still had sales charts so Batman #1 could top them.

While lots and lots of variant covers – and even a blind bagged edition – undoubtedly helped drive these sales, the new take on Batman has also been a critical hit, with a 8.4 average rating on Comic Book Round-Up. The Beat’s own reviewer wrote: “This could be the start of a classic.” It’s only the fourth time there’s been a renumbered Batman in 84 years, and this take has a new look, a new take and a general freshening up for the Dark Knight Detective.

For those who missed it first time around, a second printing is on its way. Batman #1 Second Printing will feature a recolored Batman logo on Jorge Jiménez’s main cover for issue #1, a new open-to-order cardstock variant cover by Jiménez and Tomeu Morey, plus a new variant cover by Dan Mora offered in both cardstock and foil editions.

And of course, you can celebrate Batman Day on September 20th by heading to a comic shop and trying to find a copy.
