New life is being breathed into one of the most underutilized franchises in the world, that of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Earlier this week, Dark Horse Comics announced a new comic publication in collaboration with Avatar Studios. Avatar: The Kyoshi Warriors is a three-issue limited series debuting later this spring that will inject even more lore into the sprawling franchise.

The three issues will be written by Brandon Hoáng (The Crossbow of Destiny), illustrated by BellBessa (Avatar: The Last Airbender—Ramen Rumble) and Xanthe Bouma, colored by Adele Matera (Avatar: The Last Airbender—Ashes of the Academy), and lettered by Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt (Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest). The series will feature cover drawn Danielle Weires.

“Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors leave their island home to join the war against the Fire Nation. Met with suspicion and resentment by the mainlanders, they struggle to prove their worth to the Earth Kingdom,” Dark Horse says in a synopsis of the series. “But when that opportunity arises, will they be willing to compromise their values as Kyoshi Warriors to embrace it?”

It’s far from the first time Avatar: The Last Airbender has joined the world of sequential storytelling, with in-world comics having been released as early as 2005. Dark Horse has long held the license for the property, most recently releasing a series of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra graphic novels in 2025.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Kyoshi Warriors #1 will hit comic book stores May 6 and is now available for preorder. Each 22-page issue is priced at $4.99.
