The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that an animated Venom movie is in the works at Sony, directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein (Final Destination Bloodlines). Tom Hardy, who starred in the live-action Venom trilogy, will produce alongside The Last Dance director Kelly Marcel, and Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach.
No writers are attached, although Sony Pictures Animation are opening up a writers’ room for the project. Not attached to the project at the time of writing either are Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the co-writers and producers of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequels, the success of which presumably prompted this move for Sony’s other big Marvel character.
The project joins three more animated Marvel films in the works from Sony, including the final Spider-Verse film, Beyond the Spider-Verse, due out June 18, 2027. The others are a Spider-Women spin-off starring Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), and Silk/Cindy Moon, and a Spider-Punk film co-written by the character’s actor, Daniel Kaluuya.
Sony have begun prioritizing the animated incarnations of the Spider-Man characters they own the film rights for, as (aside from the Venom movies) all of the live-action Spider-Man spin-offs (ie. Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter) failed at the box office. However, one live-action spin-off will make its debut soon: Spider-Noir, the Prime Video series starring Nicolas Cage that Lord and Miller co-developed, premiering May 27.
Lipovsky and Stein’s Final Destination Bloodlines was released in 2025, and became the most financially and critically successful entry in the longrunning horror franchise to date. Incidentally, the film was co-written and produced by Jon Watts, who directed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. The pair, whose credits also include Freaks and the live-action Kim Possible movie, have eschewed another sequel in favor of an original project, as well as this, and to co-write Gremlins 3 with director Chris Columbus: that movie will be released on November 19, 2027.
