The winners of the 45th annual Saturn Awards were announced on Friday, September 13, at a ceremony at Hollywood’s Avalon Theater, hosted by Aisha Tyler. It’s probably very little surprise that Marvel cleaned up, mainly with its 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, but also getting awards for Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: Far from Home and even one for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The latter awards were shared with Sony Pictures, so hopefully they’ll play nice on where to keep the physical awards.
HBO’s Game of Thrones won four of the television awards, while AMC’s The Walking Dead won three and Netflix’s Stranger Things won two awards as a streaming series. Supergirl took home the “Best Superhero Television Series” award, while HBO’s Westworld won for “Best Science Fiction Television Series.”

The annual Saturn Awards are a celebration of all things genre, including comic book-related movies and television series, although this year was a little different, covering a longer period of time from March 1, 2018 through July 7, 2019, which is why Avengers: Infinity War was also able to win an award for Josh Brolin‘s supporting performance.
Avengers: Endgame won for “Best Comic-to-Motion Picture Release,” Robert Downey Jr. won for “Best Actor in A Film,” plus the film won Saturday awards for production design, film editing, make-up an special/visual effects. Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Actress, while Tom Holland and Zendaya each won an acting award for this year’s Spider-Man: Far from Home, which JUST made the deadline cut-off. With Avengers: Endgame and Far from Home out of the running, this means some other big comic book movie (Wonder Woman 1984, maybe, or Black Widow?) has a chance for winning at the 46th Saturns.
Toy Story 4 won for “Best Fantasy Film” although last year’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Oscar, also won the Saturn Award for Best Animated Film. Ready Player One, A Quiet Place, Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Bad Times at El Royale, each won a single Saturn.
Supergirl winning the “Best Superhero Television Series” was pretty cool, because there was a lot of competition in that category, but Game of Thrones‘ wins weren’t as surprising despite the fan backlash to its final season. Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage and Maisie Williams won acting awards as well as the HBO series winning for “Best Fantasy Television Series.”
It’s interesting that the Saturn Awards have their own separate streaming categories rather than lumping those series in with television. One might wonder whether Stranger Things might have beaten The Walking Dead if they went up against each other.
