By Matthew Murray
Dynamite grabs the top indie comic spot this month with the first issue of their adaptation of Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet script. However, issue 2 sees a fairly large drop, and people seem unsure if the market can support the five Green Hornet titles Dynamite plans on launching.
Elsewhere on the chart Green Hornet Year One written by Matt Wagner is the second biggest indie launch of the month, The Guild and Terminator are Dark Horse’s newest launches, and Zenescope shipped a lot of books.
IDW had a 3.61% market share, and 4.02% dollar share, Dark Horse had 3.33% market share and 4.76% dollar share (gotta love those trade paperback sales), Dynamite had 3.08% market share and 3.40% dollar share, and Image had 3.01% market share and 3.22% dollar share.
I’ve listed every indie title in the top 225, every Dark Horse, Image, and IDW title in the top 300, and a selection of other titles.
Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which can be found here.
20, 60. Kevin Smith Green Hornet (Dynamite) 03/2010: Kevin Smith Green Hornet #1 - 54,122 03/2010: Kevin Smith Green Hornet #2 - 32,866 (-39.3%)
Woah, this did way better than I expected. Issue one was the number 11 book by dollar rank thanks to its $3.99 price. However, that drop for issue two is quite high, and with there soon to be five Green Hornet books on the stands I wonder what the numbers on some of them will be like.
33. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)
03/2007: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 - 109,919 03/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #12 - 88,930 03/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #23 - 64,108 ===== 04/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24 - 60,916 (-5.0%) 05/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #25 - 58,740 (-3.6%) 06/2009: BTVS Tales of the Vampires one shot- 45,568 (-22.4) 07/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #26 - 55,393 (+21.6%) 08/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #27 - 53,403 (-3.6%) 09/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #28 - 52,303 (-2.1%) 10/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #29 - 50,236 (-4.0%) 11/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #30 - 49,155 (-2.2%) 12/2009: BTVS Willow One Shot - 45,136 (-8.2%) 01/2010: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #31 - 47,013 (+4.2%) 02/2010: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #32 - 47,975 (+2.0) 03/2010: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #33 - 46,568 (-2.9%) 6 month (-11.0%) 1 year (-27.4%) 2 year (-47.6%) 3 year (-57.6%)
Standard drop. Volume six of the collections has first month sales of 7,029, down slightly from the previous volume. The sales for issue #1 above are first month only.
87. Image Firsts (Image) 03/2010: Walking Dead #1 - 24,333

Initial interest seems to be disappearing, meanwhile volume one sells 3,895 copies.
107. Star Wars Legacy (Dark Horse) 03/2007: Star Wars Legacy #9 - 33,084 03/2008: Star Wars Legacy #21 - 30,228 03/2009: Star Wars Legacy #34 - 25,304 ===== 04/2009: Star Wars Legacy #35 - 24,552 (-3.0%) 05/2009: Star Wars Legacy #36 - 24,166 (-1.6%) 06/2009: Star Wars Legacy #37 - 23,704 (-1.9%) 07/2009: Star Wars Legacy #38 - 23,162 (-2.3%) 08/2009: Star Wars Legacy #39 - 22,888 (-1.2%) 09/2009: Star Wars Legacy #40 - 22,555 (-1.5%) 10/2009: Star Wars Legacy #41 - 22,109 (-2.0%) 11/2009: Star Wars Legacy #42 - 21,659 (-2.0%) 12/2009: Star Wars Legacy #43 - 20,983 (-3.1%) 01/2010: Star Wars Legacy #44 - 20,341 (-3.1%) 02/2010: Star Wars Legacy #45 - 20,100 (-1.2%) 03/2010: Star Wars Legacy #46 - 19,790 (-1.5%) 6 month (-12.3%) 1 year (-21.8%) 2 year (-34.5%) 3 year (-40.2%)
I was correct last month; the solicitations for July say issue 50 say is the final issue.
113. Spawn (Image) 03/2005: Spawn #144 - 28,170 03/2006: Spawn #154 - 26,966 03/2007: Spawn #165 - 24,519 03/2008: Spawn #176 - 21,104 03/2009: Spawn #190 - 21,548 ===== 04/2009: Spawn #191 - 19,805 (-8.1%) 05/2009: - 06/2009: Spawn #192 - 19,796 (0%) 07/2009: Spawn #193 - 20,293 (+2.5%) 07/2009: Spawn #194 - 18,916 (-6.8%) 08/2009: - 09/2009: - 10/2009: Spawn #195 - 18,475 (-2.3%) 11/2009: - 12/2009: - 01/2010: - 02/2010: - 03/2010: Spawn #196 - 18,893 (+2.3) 6 month (n.a.) 1 year (-12.3%) 2 year (-10.5%) 3 year (-22.9%) 4 year (-29.9%) 5 year (-32.9%)
Was it the Rob Liefled art that led to this increase? Possibly. In related news Image United is incredibly late, reportedly in part due to McFarlane being really late with his contributions. Issue three is now scheduled for May.
115, 198. Angel (IDW) 03/2006: Old Friends #4 - 13,479 03/2007: Auld Lang Syne #5 - 6,351 03/2008: After the Fall #5 - 49,558 03/2009: Angel #19 - 31,767 ===== 04/2009: Angel #20 - 30,308 (-4.6%) 05/2009: Angel #21 - 28,633 (-5.5%) 06/2009: Angel #22 - 27,496 (-4.0%) 07/2009: Angel: After the Fall – Epilogue #23 - 24,003 (-12.7%) 08/2009: Angel #24 - 22,795 (-5.0%) 09/2009: Angel #25 - 23,815 (+4.5%) 10/2009: Angel #26 - 22,886 (-3.9%) 11/2009: Angel #27 - 20,731 (-9.4%) 12/2009: Angel #28 - 21,301 (+2.7%) 12/2009: Angel Annual #1 - 16,616 (-22.0%) 01/2010: Angel #29 - 20,280 (+22.5%) 02/2010: Angel #30 - 11,044 [19,394] (-4.4%) 03/2010: Angel #31 - 18,538 (-4.4%) 6 month (-22.2%) 1 year (-41.6%) 2 year (-62.6%) 3 year (+191.9%) 4 year (+37.5%)
8,350 copies of #30 show up this month, and while the drops here aren’t looking too good, they’re still way up on before the relaunch.
117. Conan the Cimmerian (Dark Horse) 03/2005: Conan #14 - 38,180 03/2006: Conan #26 - 31,573 03/2007: Conan #38 - 25,236 03/2008: - 03/2009: The Cimmerian #9 - 20,555 ===== 04/2009: The Cimmerian #10 - 20,419 (-0.7%) 05/2009: - 06/2009: The Cimmerian #11 - 20,041 (-1.9%) 07/2009: The Cimmerian #12 - 19,268 (-3.9%) 08/2009: The Cimmerian #13 - 18,881 (-2.0%) 09/2009: The Cimmerian #14 - 18,643 (-1.3%) 10/2009: - 11/2009: The Cimmerian #15 - 18,293 (-1.9%) 11/2009: The Cimmerian #16 - 17,778 (-2.8%) 12/2009: - 01/2010: Weight of Crown One Shot - 17,571 (-1.2%) 01/2010: The Cimmerian #17 - 17,356 (-1.2%) 02/2010: The Cimmerian #18 - 17,074 (-1.6%) 03/2010: The Cimmerian #19 - 18,131 (+6.2%) 6 month (-2.7%) 1 year (-11.2%) 2 year (n.a.) 3 year (-28.2%) 4 year (-42.6%) 5 year (-52.5%)
An alternative cover explains the increase. This series is ending at issue 25 to be relaunched as the 12 part Road of Kings series written by Roy Thomas.
129. The Guild (Dark Horse) 03/2010: The Guild #1 - 15,292
A spinoff of the internet series of the same name, written by its star and creator Felicia Day and drawn by Jim Rugg. You may have noticed that the most common price point of comics in the top 300 is now $3.99, Dark Horse is one of the few publishers using the $3.50 price (like they do on this title).
136, 139. At the end of its first year Irredeemable is doing very well, selling just below where it was when it launched. Will year two bring more increases?

The lowest selling comic on this month’s chart. Those last three are available through channels other than the direct market.
==========
Just a reminder, all numbers on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to the direct market. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month. These numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK.
Matthew Murray really likes (vegetarian) cooking, zines, and comic books. Now if only he could somehow combine them.
“In related news Image United is incredibly late, reportedly in part due to McFarlane being really late with his contributions. Issue three is now scheduled for May.”
Thanks for the update. I was wondering where this series was. No real surprise that its late, but Image hasn’t put out any news on it for a while letting us know what’s going on.
The reason why many independent comics don’t suffer big drop-offs when there are big gaps in the release schedule is quite simple: The orders are (most of the time) not adjustable.
For example, Executive Assistant Iris #3 was solicited in June 2009, and #4 was solicited in July 2009. They were solicited as monthly, but they were released 6 months apart. The place where any drop-off will be strongest is likely to be #5, which wasn’t solicited until after #4 came out.
Thanks for doing these!
There seems to be a weird formatting thing going on with the first line of each title, where it doesn’t start on a new line and gets cut off by the column border. Maybe it’s just my browser?
It always makes me sad to see so few original creator-owned comics in the top 100 – this month only The Boys and the dollar reprint of The Walking Dead #1.
Corey: It’s not just you, I’m having the same problem.
Urgh, don’t know what happened to the formatting, I think it’s all fixed now.
Brian: Thanks for the information! At one point do orders for books solicited through Diamond get cancelled? Is there a point where books are cancelled due to being so late?
Aspen really needs to get its act together.
I’m fairly certain the Star Trek movie adaptation was released last year at the same time as the movie. Is this a re-release, maybe?
I always find these sales charts interesting, and want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
Additionally:
“Also, this is not a porn comic as I originally thought.”
For some reason this made me laugh out loud, which I’m sure was not the intention. Then I thought about how it could have been repeated out of context after any title on the chart, such as “Angel Hole in the World” or “The Sword,” and I was childishly snickering for several minutes.
Calling Choker “a Ben Templesmith project” will not sit well with THE BOSS.
Re: Star Wars: Legacy
Indeed you were correct that it’s being canceled with Issue #50. I couldn’t find any mention of that a month ago. Perhaps I didn’t look hard enough. Or perhaps it actually had not been announced and you have a psychic ability that had not previously been revealed. ;)
In any event, as someone who had questioned that news, I did want to post to give you credit for being right about that.
I am sorely disappointed with this news, the title is always among my Top 10 every month and while I do read quite a few comics each month, this is one of the few that I will genuinely miss (unless it is relaunched and I’m crossing my fingers for that!)
Re: Executive Assistant Iris #4
I believe that it had 4 Regular Covers orderable in equal quantities and a 5th Retailer Incentive Cover, which was 1-2 more Covers than Issue #3 had. *If* I am correct, then that may have contributed to it’s sales stability this month.
Re: Green Hornet
Part of the difference in sales between the 1st and 2nd Issues *might* be attributable to the many Variants that Issue #1 had. I believe that there were 4 Regular Covers and at least 4 Variants (though I think that there may have been even more than that).
“with there soon to be five Green Hornet books on the stands I wonder what the numbers on some of them will be like”
The numbers on the floppies aren’t nearly as important as having collections aplenty in the bookstore channel when/if the movie (ever) comes out. (Especially one with Kevin Smith’s name on it. Even if it’ll take up twice the rack space of the others.)
Long as they can all stay in five-figure territory for the duration of the various LS, DE is likely ecstatic about their success.
Green Hornet #1 had a total of 15 different covers, and #2 had 9. Which is kinda ri-goddam-diculous, but there you go.
And here I thought no one issue had beat Gen 13’s 13 variants for issue 1!! haha…
That being said, Marvel have been trying hard lately, with as much as 6 variant covers on their number 1 issues… ;)
I can’t get over the Spawn gap there! 2 issues in 8 months. How can anyone continue to buy it? And how can creators do that to their fans? Its like a slap in the face! haha…
Matt:
The cancellation system at Diamond seems arbitrary, and may be set by the publishers themselves. Some companies will cancel and resolicit a title if its just a few months late, and there are some items on my unfilled initial order list that go all the way back to October 2006 (Spawn/ Batman #1!), which was when I placed my first Diamond order.
JameS:
No one buys Spawn anymore. I’m down to one subscriber and no shelf copies. They should have ended the series after the Apocalypse happened.
Green Hornet had 15 different variant covers?! Wow, that’s tragically impressive.
And thanks Brian for the info. I was wondering the same thing as Matt.
“I’m fairly certain the Star Trek movie adaptation was released last year at the same time as the movie. Is this a re-release, maybe?”
I do not believe there has been a comic adaptation of Star Trek 11 before. You may be thinking of Countdown (the prequel to ST11) or the Wrath of Khan (ST2) adaptation.
“I think [Tank Girl] has to be a record for being published by the most different publishers in a short period of time.”
How about Star Trek, which was split between DC and Malibu at one point, and then transferred over to Marvel at one point in the mid-late nineties?
