Back in August, Disney announced a LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special animated special that would air on November 17th in a rather clever homage to The Star Wars Holiday Special, the infamous CBS holiday special that aired on exactly the same date back in 1978. Today the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special trailer was released, revealing more about the plot which spans the entire saga of the Star Wars franchise.
It appears through some time travel shenanigans, Jedi Rey gets to visit various moments throughout time and space of the Star Wars universe. Time travel isn’t a completely new concept to the Star Wars canon as fans of the Star Wars Rebels animated series can tell you. Moreover, the use of a crystal as a “key” to time travel in the Holiday Special may be a nod to a reference to a rather deep cut and obscure reference to Eternity Crystal from the Marvel UK Star Wars comic book series.
The voice cast includes actors from the live-action films reprising their roles for the animated special including Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO). Additionally Star Wars: The Clone Wars actors Matt Lanter (Anakin Skywalker), Tom Kane (Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn), James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Dee Bradley Baker (clone troopers) are also lending their voices for the special. Though not confirmed, it seems that Trevor Devall is voicing Emperor Palpatine, a role he’s played in previous LEGO Star Wars projects.
In addition, Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company released the official poster for The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.
Rey sets off on a new adventure with BB-8 to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force. At a mysterious Jedi Temple, she is hurled into a cross-timeline adventure through beloved moments in Star Wars cinematic history, coming into contact with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan and other iconic heroes and villains from all nine Skywalker saga films. But will she make it back in time for the Life Day feast and learn the true meaning of holiday spirit?
The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is streaming Nov. 17 on Disney+.
