Two years ago, a producer for the Scooby–Doo! Mystery Incorporated cartoon confirmed what has long been assumed by many fans: bookish member Velma Dinkley was in fact intended to be a lesbian and be in a romantic relationship with the character of Marcie Fleach (nicknamed “Hot Dog Water”) for that iteration of the popular animated franchise. Velma’s romantic life hasn’t played a major part in the various Scooby-Doo media that have been released since. That all changes with the new Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! animated film because Velma gets a new girlfriend.
The Scooby-Doo Halloween special introduces Coco Diablo, voiced by Myrna Velasco, the woman responsible for the various villains the team has faced over the years including The Black Knight, Space Kook and the Ghost Diver. When doppelgänger ghosts of their foes starting appearing, the gang have to team up with Coco to unmask the baddie. Though on opposites sides of the law, it’s love at first sight for Velma (voiced by Kate Micucci).
Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is available now on Digital and will be released on DVD on October 18th
