The original Steve Rogers is coming back as Captain America in a few months

6

Last night something totally unprecedented in human history occurred: there were infomercials for upcoming superhero projects on two different networks, with Marvel’s Marvel’s Captain America: 75 Heroic Years taking up a FULL HOUR before the season premiere of Agent Carter on Disney-owned ABC. (An hour later two special son various DC-themed movie and TV properties aired on the CW but we’ll get to that in a bit.) IF you think Disney and Warners aren’t locked in a heated battle for your very soul, think again.

Anyway, while a history of Captain America from comics to Chris Evans was presented the hour wound up with the news that Steve Rogers is coming back as Captain America with a book by Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz due this Spring. While we all knew this Cap would come back some day, many are mourning the end of the “new heroes” era where Sam Wilson, once known as the Falcon, took on the mantle of Captain America in the comics when Rogers super serum stopped working and he aged. In the new comic, Steve is young and spritely again, and has a NEW costume and shield, designed by Daniel Acuna.

Wilson will stay on as *A* Captain America however, according to an interview on Marvel.com with Spencer. “There are enough problems out there, and enough bad guys, to keep both of them busy. They’ll have very different missions; Sam will continue fighting the battles no one else will go near, while Steve is faced with a resurgent threat from his past: Hydra is back, and stronger than ever.”

African American Cap, along with Korean American Hulk, Lady Thor, Girl Wolverine and Miles Morales Spider-Man make up a group of “alternative” characters that Marvel has been promoting quite a bit in recent years, and they seem to have caught on with the newer more diverse audience for comics we’ve been talking about. A lot of people are disappointed that the “real”, white Cap will push aside the more diverse one, but let’s face it, comics have always spun off whole families of characters, from Superman, Superboy and so on to the Marvel Family of Shazam. So the tradition keeps on going.

Here’s Marvel’s statement:

This spring, Marvel’s Steve Rogers takes back the iconic moniker that gave him notoriety and returns to the mantel of Captain America with CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS from writer Nick Spencer and artist Jesus Saiz.

First revealed on ABC’s “Captain America: 75 Heroic Years,” Steve Rogers will once again don the red, white, and blue and continue the adventures of Marvel’s Sentinel of Liberty in this all-new series, with an all-new mission statement while proudly carrying an all-new shield. And today, Marvel is pleased to present your first peek inside the bold new series that will take Captain America in a whole new direction!
“It’s an exciting time to be writing Captain America, for sure– this year is the character’s 75th Anniversary, not to mention the upcoming release of Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. And with CIVIL WAR II approaching in the Marvel Universe, it felt like the perfect time to restore Steve Rogers to his former self,” says series writer Nick Spencer.
Recently drained of the Super Soldier Serum that gave him his strength, speed and endurance, Steve Rogers was no longer fit to wield the shield and he passed the title of Captain America to his closest ally, Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon. So what happens to Sam Wilson now that Steve has returned? Enemies of freedom beware – there are now two Captain Americas protecting the people!
“CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS and CAPTAIN AMERICA: SAM WILSON will act as great counter-points to one another,” continues Spencer. “If you’re digging the topical, ripped-from-the-headlines approach we’re taking in Sam’s book, we’ve got plenty more of that to come. And if you’re up for a more timeless take, with Captain America facing off against Hydra and his classic rogues gallery, Steve’s book will be just the thing for you.”

The All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe is in turmoil. The threat of impeding Hydra forces grows by the day worming their way into Marvel’s Super Hero community. Anyone can be a threat, and no one is to be trusted. But what is Hydra’s ultimate goal? There is only one man who can challenge the threat of Hydra – Captain America himself – Steve Rogers!

Will his first day back on the job be his last? Find out when CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS #1 arrives in comic shops and digital devices this spring!

  1. I gotta say, very nice. It is too bad that Sam Wilson has to be used for his ‘color’ to sell titles though, but I like it that he is also still Captain America, at the end of the day he should keep both the wings, and sheild. What if like Agent 13 had a kid w/Steve, but then it was mulatto -uh oh, did I just give a way the story behind the Civil War 2?!???!? The whole story will have no real content, but it will be all about old character-based assets being rep’d by different races, genders, and religions…like good ‘American’ ‘comic books’…

(bring sequential back please, and stop pushing titles based on this Civil War 2 premise… I mean, like, c’mon!!! Dang! man!)

  2. Also, after a double-take at the new shield action pics, Rogers is gonna need some of this: Tarrago Hightech Nano Protector Spray 250 Ml -he can get it, I just saw it online for sale for like, 11.00 free shipping… ‘Cuz that shield is not gonna be a pretty sight after he is done using… Either that or just don’t ever use white paint on that thing -naaawww, becuz I would just not even want the stringy bits of blood hanging off that thing, n brain matter n sh!+, so yeah, there is this too, btw: DG Nano Ultra-Hydrophobic Waterproof Spray 250ml. Actually just stop by Wakanda, and get a another round disc deal, man. ‘Not digging the new shield for Rogers. Sorry. …Maybe if you told me that the shield is a trans-gendered, mexician, jewish superhero that can turn into things like that shield, then heeeey, that’s what this ‘all new marvel’ is going to get my $4.00 is all about yeaaah, baby. I miss David Bowie, too.
