The Netflix of Comics updates: ComicBlitz now available on iPhone; Scribd changes business model

1

As you may recall, several companies out there are trying to become the “Netflix of Comics” with a streaming service that offers tons of comics to read. One such as ComicBlitz, which launched last year an an app, which just became available on all iOS devices and has improved its platform.

ComicBlitz offers all all you read service for $9.99 a month. It launched for iPad, but is now available on iPhones as well. The service offers more than 3,000 comics from 17 publishers, such as Dynamite, Valiant, Aspen, Action Lab, Zenescope and Alterna. Darby Pop, Markosia, TPub and children’s publisher Capstone are all now available as well.

The app has changed a bit as well:

In addition, ComicBlitz has made it much easier for new customers to sample the app.  “We have done away with asking for your credit card up front. Instead, we are offering customers free comics just for signing up,” says Plosky.  “This way, you get to experience the platform before you have to commit to anything.”  This sample provides new readers the ability to access all of ComicBlitz’s standard features, choose any free comics they want to read, add to custom lists, to their offline reading queue, and more.

The ComicBlitz website has been overhauled as well.  It is easier & quicker than ever to sign up, and perhaps even most importantly, the entire catalog is now available to view online.  Customers old and new alike can now access every comic book cover, series count, and description on the ComicBlitz website, as well already a feature in the app.

While ComicBlitz is expanding, Scribd, the long running streaming content service, has revised its business model

Under the new plan, Scribd’s subscription service will essentially be a hybrid offering. Monthly subscribers will be issued Monthly Read credits that will enable them to read three e-books and one audiobook every month from the full Scribd library, while still being able to read an unlimited number of books from Scribd Selects, a rotating selection of titles. There will be no change in the service’s $8.99 monthly price. In addition, monthly users will be able to roll over unused credits, so that those who read less than three books in a month can read more titles in subsequent months.

In terms of what goes into the limited and unlimited offerings, titles will be chosen based on terms reached with publishing partners, as well as seasonal and topical relevance as determined by the Scribd merchandising team. Titles will rotate on a monthly basis.

Scribd started offering comics less than a year ago to great success, but had to tinker with its offering on some genres, such as romance, where “power readers” would chew through the catalog like moths through cashmere.

  1. You actually make it appear really easy with your presentation however
I to find this matter to be really one thing that I believe I
might by no means understand. It sort of feels too
complicated and extremely extensive for me. I’m looking forward for your next publish, I will
try to get the hold of it!
