Critical Role, the multimedia performative tabletop RPG company, continues to expand on the world of their adventures with the past of Yasha Nydoorin of the Mighty Nein taking the spotlight in September 2021 at Dark Horse.
Critical Role started life as a group of voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons. Their private campaign was converted into a webseries for Geek & Sundry in 2015. The group made their own company under the Critical Role brand, split from Geek & Sundry in 2018, and set up their own YouTube and Twitch channels to continue their adventures direct to audiences. They have extended the stories of their adventures into other media including art books and comics.
Vox Machina was the group’s first recorded campaign, following the exploits of the eponymous group. It ran from March 2015 to October 2017. Since January 2018, Critical Role have been doing an ongoing campaign featuring their latest group – The Mighty Nein. All campaigns are set in the same fantasy world of Exandria, created by the group’s Game Master (and Critical Role Chief Creative Officer) Matthew Mercer.
Critical Role partnered with Dark Horse Comics in 2017 to produce art books and graphic novels set in the world of their campaigns. They have two branched prequel series of comics which tell the backstories of the characters – The Mighty Nein and Vox Machina. The third series of Vox Machina: Origins is currently being published in single issues. May 2021 will also bring another miniseries Critical Role: Tales of Exandria I to further explore elements of the game-world itself.
Critical Role: Mighty Nein Origins is being released as a series of hardcover graphic novels. Critical Role: Mighty Nein Origins – Caleb and Critical Role: Mighty Nein Origins – Jester are scheduled to be released in August 2021. Critical Role: Mighty Nein Origins – Yasha Nydoorin will be the third in the series and will release in September.
