Well, this news perked up a winter weekend. At Brazil’s Comic Con Experience, Sony unveiled the first look at Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to the Oscar winning Into the Spider-Verse, with the stunning news that it will be in two parts.

The first Spider-Verse was a masterpiece that unveiled groundbreaking new animation techniques – and a thrilling story that inspired everyone who saw it. And the first look trailer of the next part is every bit as awesome.

As for what and who will be in Across the Spider-Verse…Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld will be back as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, but we also glimpse Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara, who will be played by Oscar Isaac. And  after that, the rumors just run wild. Issa Rae as Spider-Woman and Takuya Yamashiro, who played the “Japanese Spider-Man” in 1978, have been confirmed. But it doesn’t stop there: various rumors suggest that Cindy “Silk” Moon will show up, along with the villain Spot. Hey it’s a whole universe to play with.

Across the Spider-Verse has a script by returning producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, along with Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are the directors.

Lord and Miller told EW that they just had too many ideas to fit into a single film.

“Miles’ story is an epic,” the pair said. “We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one. We’re working on them both as we speak. Part Two will be out sometime in 2023. We will sleep again in 2024.”

“Every dimension looks and feels radically different from all the others,” Lord and Miller teased. “They all look like they were drawn by a different artist.”

Speaking of artists, the first Spider-Verse movie was a feast for comics fans because of all the touches from the comics that were fully realized on the screen. And at least one comics master worked on the new film, as Bill Sienkiewicz revealed on Facebook – he did some concept work for the Across the Spider-Verse.

The Sienkiewicz influence was evident in the first film’s Kingpin, so it will be fun to spot the influences in the two new films.

Across the Spider-Verse will also break even moe ground with its animation techniques, according to producers.

This first look shows boasts some impressive techniques and it’s only two minutes long.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will hit theaters on October 7, 2022.
