Show the love: Third Annual Mini-Comics Day

I’m a HUGE mini-comics fan; I think they encapsulate the potential and diversity of the medium perfectly in the way in which they combine storytelling, art, and innovation with accessibility and a do-it-yourself attitude. Its currently a very good time to be fond of the floppy- the format has been experiencing somewhat of a revival in the past year or so, thanks to the pooping up of various micro-publishing outfits like Oily Comics and Retrofit.

And now’s the time to get involved: this year sees the third annual Mini Comics Day take place, with a date of 24th March set for the event. Armed with a motto of ‘celebrating the art of cartooning and creating hand-made comic books,’ Mini-Comics Day aims to get people creating their own comics:

‘On Mini-Comics Day, participating cartoonists from around the world will write, draw, and print copies of a mini-comic, completing the entire process from start to finish in a day or less. Anyone in the world can participate.

Mini-comics have been democratizing the art of making comic books since the 70′s or earlier… with the popularization of photocopiers, it became apparent that anyone with an inclination and some spare change could print a little comic book. Wildly varying in both form and content, mini-comics are a wonderful synthesis of cartooning and hand-made art objects.’

If like me, you’re totally devoid of drawing ability and imagination, you could always do what I do and join in by supporting the efforts of others who do it much, much better. Here’s a very brief list of some artists/collectives putting out fantastic mini-comics, and from whom I regularly buy:
