The cartooning world—and the rest of the world—reacts to the Charlie Hebdo attack

1
January 7th, 2015 will always be a grim date in for free speech, tolerance and French cartooning. As we all know, 12 people, including 10 staffers and four cartoonists were killed in a terrorist attack on the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo yesterday morning. The attack—which some called the 9/11 for France—left grieving and reeling for those lost and for a world in which such a senseless act could occur. The four cartoonists killed—Georges Wolinski, Charb, Tignous, and Cabu—included one Angouleme Grand Prize winner, Wolinski, who won in 2005. It was a grievous toll.

The Cover to Nonplayer #2 and how to make money as an artist

17
Some rambling thoughts on various aspects of making comics and making money. I alluded earlier to the sudden announcement that Nonplayer #2 by Nate Simpson was finished and would be presumably be coming out later this year. Simpson has written a much longer piece complete with a FAQ confirming that the issue will be in the May solicitations from Image; he's contacted Image about reprinting issue #1 but no response yet, and Warners—which had optioned the comic—has let their rights lapse, so it's there for the taking. And then he gets to why it took 3 1/2 years to draw the comic. It's a long answer but I'll lift a graph:

Kibbles ‘n’ Bits 3/21/14: The Apotheosis of Zen Pencils

9
§ Zen Pencils is a website where a cartoonist named Gavin Aung Than takes famous speeches written by other folks and turns them into comics. It was the subject of a famous beatdown by Abhay Khosla who tagged it as vapid pap that stole other people's thoughts, and some other folks think it's just fine and signed it to a book deal. Perhaps Than was stung by some of the haters because he just penned his first ORIGINAL cartoon, called "The Artist-Troll War" and it is a bit...on the nose. It is in four parts;
