SDCC ’19: THE ORVILLE jumps to Hulu in 2020

The Orville enters the Hulu galaxy

Big news for The Orville. At the series panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, show creator Seth MacFarlane announced that the show would be moving from Fox to Hulu next year, marking a big jump from a traditional TV network to streaming-only.

In a lengthy statement, MacFarlane said, in part:

The Orville has been a labor of love for me, and there are two companies which have supported that vision in a big way: 20th Century Fox Television where I’ve had a deal since the start of my career, and FOX Broadcasting Company, now FOX Entertainment, which has been my broadcast home for over 20 years. My friends at the network understood what I was trying to do with the series, and they’ve done a spectacular job of marketing, launching and programming it for these past two seasons. But as the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network. So we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show.”

Based on his comments, it seems that Fox wasn’t willing to give the show a longer break. That’s understandable given the show’s success, but Hulu now has another beloved show under its belt, in addition to shows like Castle Rock and Veronica Mars, the latter which debuted its much-anticipated fourth season a full week early during the series panel on Friday.

Craig Erwich, Hulu’s SVP Content Development, said, “We know our viewers are huge fans of The Orville, along with many of Seth MacFarlane’s groundbreaking hit shows, and we can’t wait to bring Season 3 to them exclusively on the platform.”

Interestingly, that will put The Orville on a streaming platform like its competitor Star Trek: Discovery, which airs on CBS All Access.

The Orville stars MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, and Scott Grimes. It is produced by MacFarlane, Brannon Braga, David A. Goodman, Jason Clark, and Jon Cassar.

Hulu says the show will return in late 2020.
