With both Game of Thrones and Marvel Studios among fan-favorite properties skipping SDCC’s Hall H for the first time in years, it’s the perfect opportunity for other brands to fill the vacuum and take advantage of this opportunity.
Director James Gunn, who helped make the Guardians of the Galaxy a recognizable and bankable property, announced not too long ago he would be attending SDCC despite the absence of Marvel Studios. Given that Gunn is still in the midst of working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it’s fairly obvious that his presence is unrelated to GotG but it may in fact still be in the realm of Marvel movies.

Looking at the SDCC programming schedule, Friday 6:15 in Hall H is the Sony Pictures Marvel panel where the film company will be showcasing its upcoming Into the Spider-Verse and Venom (not in MCU!) films. It wouldn’t be too farfetched to anticipate some new developments regarding the recently announced Silk film and Morbius movie with Jared Leto. Could Gunn be possibly be involved with Sony’s slate of Marvel movies post-GotG Vol. 3 and what does that symbol mean? Apparently it resembles the “Brand of Sacrifice” from the anime/manga Berserk which I only discovered thanks to Gunn’s Twitter replies. Of course, it could be something else altogether. Whatever it is, we’ll find out Friday night.
