DC Entertainment has released the first trailer for Titans, the first live-action TV series offering from the forthcoming DC Universe streaming service.
The trailer focuses heavily on Raven, played by Teagan Croft, as she tracks down Dick Grayson/Robin, played by Brenton Thwaites, to ask him for help. Glimpses of the other Titans – Starfire (Anna Diop), Beast Boy (Ryan Potter), and the duo of Hawk & Dove (Alan Ritchson & Minka Kelly) – are also peppered throughout.
The first surprise here is that the trailer is age-restricted and rated TV-MA, which I’m not sure anyone was expecting. It’s pretty clear why, though, when during Robin’s first appearance the boy wonder drops an f-bomb and straight-up murders – with a gun – a gang of criminals in a darkened alley. This show is going to make Riverdale look like Josie & The Pussycats – and not even the movie, I mean the old animated series.
Beyond the grim-dark tone, there’s something about this trailer that just looks kind of cheap. The effects look like pretty standard DC TV effects, but the sets look really sparse and empty. The three-ring circus in particular, the first location seen in the trailer, feels much too small in scale. Maybe that’s on purpose and it’ll make sense on the show, but it’s not a great first impression.
Check out the trailer below (if you’re over 18, that is) and see for yourself. Titans premieres when the DC Universe app goes live this fall.
