SDCC ’13: get ready to wander through the Ender’s Game mini-theme park

Each year at Comic-Con we wonder what will be the big display outside the Hilton Gaslamp? There’s a little grassy patch there and it’s near and dear to movie studio marketing teams. One year it was Chinese clay warriors. Last year it was Frankenweenie. This year, it will be Ender’s Game based on the Orson Scott Card SFnovel. A press release about all the stuff going on for the movie at Comic-Con included this little bit:

Exclusive Fan Experience – Attendees will be able to visit an elaborate, specially constructed ENDER’S GAME exhibit outside of the Hilton Gaslamp, featuring 8 unique rooms representing the most iconic environments of Ender’s world, complete with original film props and set pieces used in the movie.  Throughout the experience, attendees will be able to see exclusive film footage on LED screens, interact with new digital content, integrate photos of themselves into the highly anticipated Battle Room, and register to win a home make over.

As the piece on Badass Digest made clear, this press release also mentions Card only once. You may recall that he’s somewhat unpopular these days for his very vocal opposition to gay marriage. So you know, he and Antonin Scalia are hoisting a few beers together and pining for the good old days and federalism right about now.

Ender’s Game the movie is expected to be an end of the year huge hit, and distancing it from Card can only help that. He won’t be at at the Comic-Con panel for the film, and everyone at Summit probably hopes you’ll pretend that he never existed.

Does this mean people will also boycott the mini theme park? We’ll find out in three weeks.

  1. Cliff–I agree.
If this film is successful, a politically active homophobe will profit and use those profits to fund groups that actively seek to block equal rights for all. I know all involved in making Ender’s Game do not share the creator’s views, but if you lay with dogs you wake up with fleas.
