I don’t know if kids are reading these books today, but I’ll never forget some of the terrifying books that used to occupy my elementary school classrooms when I was little. While In A Dark, Dark Room And Other Scary Stories is the one that sticks with me the most (remember the girl with the ribbon around her neck????), Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark by Alvin Schwartz was another mainstay for those of us that grew up Gen X and just a little thereafter.
And now they’re making a movie of it! Produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by André Øvredal, here’s the first trailer for what could be an exceptionally creepy adaptation:
It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home.
An interesting way to tie in a few of these stories from the anthology series. It releases August 9th, usually a bad time to go the theater, but perhaps this might be the rare exception to the rule.
