Rumor: Drew Goddard to write/direct new Marvel led Spider-Man film

2

Robert Downey Jr. teased last week that a big announcement was coming, and to some (me included) in the wake of the big Marvel-Sony agreement regarding Spider-Man, this meant perhaps a casting reveal.

On the other hand, what Latino Review is reporting would work too.

The big leaders in breaking tent-pole scoops have relayed this afternoon that Sony’s 2017 relaunch of Spider-Man will be written and directed by Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods). You may recall that Goddard was originally scheduled to write and direct the Sinister Six spin-off for the Andrew Garfield-Marc Webb iteration of the franchise.

They report the new film will be entitled The Spectacular Spider-Man and that Kevin Feige and the Marvel team have envisioned the relaunched Spidey as a series of three films to come out over consecutive summers. The story, apparently of all three entries, will focus on Spider-Man battling the Sinister Six.

Here are the other key items they state to look for in the new film:

No new origin story, Spidey exists from the beginning, taken as a given

New actor, probably an unknown, he will be specifically based in High School and they want him to be able to grow up into the role.  The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter.

A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers

The first film will involve the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.

Obviously, until there’s official confirmation, this still falls under the rumor banner. But, Goddard has a good relationship with both Sony and Marvel Studios (remember, he developed Daredevil for Netflix), as well as being thick as thieves with Joss Whedon, so his ascendancy to directing the new Spider-Man film would make a great deal of sense.

  1. Even if none of the rest of this is true, I really hope that they skip the origin story for the next movie. It’s reached the “Bruce Wayne’s Parents Getting Gunned Down” stage for me – everyone knows it, there’s no need to show it again.
