Robert Kirkman moving over to Amazon with 2-year production deal

Well well. it seem the Mark Millar to Netflix deal wasn’t the only comics content creator who was pacting big time in recent months. Robert Kirkman and his Skybound shingle are ankling AMC for…Amazon!

In a stunning move, Kirkman and his Skybound Entertainment company have exited their overall deal with longtime home AMC in favor of what is said to be a sizable two-year overall deal with Amazon Studios.

Under the pact, Kirkman will develop TV projects exclusively for Amazon’s Prime Video platform, which will also have a first-look deal with Skybound.

Skybound co-presidents of film and television Bryan and Sean Furst will oversee the Amazon project slate in conjunction with Kirkman and Alpert.

While AMC has been a happy home for The Walking Dead and the Fear the Walking Dead spin-off, the Amazon deal with reunite Kirkman with production exec Sharon Tal Yguado, who oversaw TWD’s roll-out and signed Outcast over at Showtime. Tal Yguado’s role at Amazon is to “focus on science fiction, action, fantasy and horror series.” Sounds like this deal will do that.

Kirkman is almost alone among comics creators for having firmly established himself as as a showrunner with all of his Skybound projects. None have had the seismic impact of The Walking Dead, however. Other projects have included, a movie starring Daryl Norman Reedus, and several TV and VR projects in development.  In addition, Invincible is being developed at Universal with Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg working on the superhero tale.

But Kirkman should find a happy home at Amazon, who, one guesses might have thrown a wheelbarrow or two of money at him:

“At Skybound Entertainment we strive to tell the best stories in the most unique and creative ways in an effort to always break new ground,” Kirkman said. “A forward-thinking company like Amazon is the perfect home for us. Their new foray into genre fiction has us at peak optimism for what can be accomplished during this unprecedented partnership. Sharon Tal Yguado has been an instrumental force in the success of Walking Deadand Outcast from Day 1. Being able to not only continue that relationship, but also expand it into new territory with the vast resources of Amazon, means great things are ahead for myself, David Alpert, Skybound and fans of awesome entertainment. Look out world, here we come!”

Who will be the next to pact??? Speculate in the comments!

  1. I’m surprised no one has snapped up the rights to Image Comics’ ‘Kill or Be Killed’ by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Elizabeth Breitweiser. It’s terrific storytelling and would make a great series.
