Riverdale is a hit! Will the stars be the next big nerdlebrities?

Seeing as we’re talking metrics this Monday, one of the stats revealed in one of the data presentations at last weeks ICv2 NYCC Insider Talks was that Riverdale ranks right after The Walking Dead in terms of social media reach.

Thus is should come as no surprise that Riverdale’s second season premiere rating jumps nearly 60% from the first episode, and were a hit in the coveted teen demo for The CW. It appears that months of Netflix availability did the trick:

The dark teen drama based on Archie Comics earned series high returns: a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.3 million viewers. Those are respective jumps of 60 and 57 percent compared to its original premiere in January. Better still for Riverdale, it marked The CW’s most watched telecast among teenagers since the heyday of The Vampire Diaries in 2012.

Riverdale’s growth seems to be a fairly clear boost from the heavy online sampling earlier in the year and an allegedly huge second life on Netflix. The drama, which landed on the streamer at the end of the first season’s run, is said to have been a substantial hit. Network execs have hoped for these kinds of sophomore lifts from aggressive online releases, but this is the first time there’s been any significant evidence of such a strategy having an impact on linear ratings.

This is very good news for Archie and showrunner Roberto Aguirre Sacasa. A stylish. quirky show that’s basically Twin Peaks for teenagers, Riverdale hits  Archie’s eternal sweet spot (teens) and maybe lures in an adult or two with its smarts.

I’ll be very interested to see how this evolves in terms of convention guests, as well. Game of Thrones and Walking Dead are a bit long in the tooth (and GoT stars don’t do many cons) – The Stranger Things cast has made headlines but they’re growing up and won’t be cute forever. A large group of charismatic TV stars on a fresh new show could possibly enliven the convention nerdlebrity circuit!  Cole Sprouse’s Jughead is the potential Daryl here. That’s IF they like crowds. We’ll see.

  1. Great news! The show isn’t my cup of tea, but it seemed like a clever show teens would enjoy. Always glad to see success stories!

  2. Also – credit the CW for rerunning the entire series during the summer. That;s how my youngest niece got hooked on it. and now she’s has something to talk about with her junior high school cohorts who are also hooked on it.
