Masks and proof of vaccination will be required for most shows in 2021

Even while New York City rolled out new guidelines for inside events, ReedPop has announced updated health and safety protocols for their upcoming events, including New York Comic Con, Florida Supercon, Emerald City Comic Con and Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2).

The guidelines are in accordance with local rules and are in addition to previously announced guidelines including directional and distance markings and increased sanitization.

For those attending New York Comic Con, masks will be required, and in order to attend fans will need to show proof of vaccination, and for attendees under 12, a negative COVID test. The new guidelines arrive as the Delta variant is causing more COVID-19 cases worldwide, including “breakthrough” infections of vaccinated individuals.

NYCC Event Director Kristina Rogers told the Beat that “Everyone in our community wants to get back together so we want to do this as safely as possible, so that people can see the folks that they haven’t in over a year now. We think the best path forward for that is masks along with all the additional measures.”

She added that they’ve been working very closely with the Javits Center and other venues, and “they have been really supportive of anything that we’ve wanted to do.”

ReedPOP president Lance Fensterman noted that he knew of at least one instance where a fan who previously refused to get vaccinated decided to get the vaccine when they learned they would need it for NYCC. “If we changed their mind, that’s a good thing.”

New requirements for each show are as follows:

Florida Supercon Requirements for Attendees:

All attendees are required to wear an approved face covering while attending Florida Supercon per the recommended CDC guidelines, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated.

At this time, ReedPop anticipates that everyone entering the Javits Center ages 12 and over will need to be fully vaccinated with vaccines approved or authorized by the FDA or WHO against COVID-19 in order to attend and participate at NYCC, and must show proof of vaccination at their time of entry. Details regarding full vaccination status and ReedPop’s verification process will be provided over the next few weeks.

NYCC attendees younger than 12 must be accompanied by a fully vaccinated guardian and must provide proof of one of the following:

  • negative rapid antigen COVID-19 test taken within 6 hours of entry to each day of the event, or
  • negative lab PCR COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of entry of each day of the event.

In addition, all attendees must properly wear a face covering at all times while inside the building except while seated when eating or drinking. An overview of the most up to date health & safety protocols for New York Comic Con can be found here.
