Here’s a “comic book gets optioned” story that has a bit more bite than usual. Black by Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3 (with additional art by Khary Randolph and Jamal Igle) has been optioned for a film by Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8, Deadline reports. And as they point out, Black’s story of a world where only African-Americans have super powers is a potentially explosive idea in the world where Amazon and HBO are dealing with controversy over Black America and Confederate, respectively. Studio 8’s Jon Silk and Rishi Rajani are developing Black.
Having just wrapped its initial six-issue run, the series created by Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3 starts with a police shooting in Brooklyn that sees teen Kareem Jenkins survive a hail of bullets and discover that he is a lot more powerful than he ever knew. As Jenkins connects with others who share similar powers, a widespread oppressive global conspiracy to keep the knowledge of such superpowers from the world — and especially the black community — themselves is unveiled to all.
