The CW is gearing up to debut The Winchesters today October 11 and the talent behind the Supernatural prequel shared all the details at New York Comic-Con 2022. Showrunner Robbie Thompson and producers Danneel Ackles and Jensen Ackles (Dean from the “mothership” series) were in attendance along with the new show’s stars Meg Donnelly (Mary Campbell) and Drake Rodger (John Winchester).
Throughout the roundtable, the cast and producers shared a ton of information about the next installment in the Supernatural universe. Fans of the show can look forward to learning more about John and Mary’s love story, which begins right after John’s return from Vietnam. Thompson promised that The Winchesters will not rewrite what was laid out in the original beloved show–it will only add to it while staying true to the rich mythology already in place.
Ackles and Thompson both touched on inclusion, and how this new show will expand on diversity in the cast. Besides Donnelly and Rodger’s characters, the “Scoobies” in Mary’s gang are Latika (Nida Khurshid) and Carlos (Jojo Fleites), who are already becoming fan favorites before the show has even debuted.

At the panel later in the afternoon, the audience received a preview screening of the first episode. The vibe of the show so far is definitely a perfect fit, and the parallels and Easter eggs to Supernatural are abundant.
After the screening, the cast and producers took to the stage for a question-and-answer session with the audience. The love between the cast and the fans was tangible; there really is a Supernatural family.
The biggest reveal of the day was that Tom Welling (Smallville) will be playing Mary’s father Samuel. Welling made a surprise appearance at the panel, making the already jazzed crowd get even wilder. Ackles joked to Donnelly that her father was Superman, making sure that she and everyone understood just how huge this casting is.
The first episode of The Winchesters premieres this evening on The CW.
