Way back in January 2016, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a $1 Billion expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City.

The North Hall (site of Artist Alley) will be torn down, and in the space to the north of original convention center will be built:

  • 90,000 square feet of permanent exhibit space, to be combined with current exhibit space, to create an approximately 500,000-square-foot exhibition hall;
  • 45,000 square feet of meeting room space;
  • A 55,000 square-foot ballroom, the largest of its kind in the New York region;
  • A green roof terrace and pavilion accommodating 1,500 people for outdoor events;
  • LEED Silver certification;
  • An on-site truck marshaling facility with room for more than 230 event and exhibit-related trucks
  • 27 new loading docks;
  • Added kitchen and food service areas; and
  • Back-of-House and administrative space.

I recently toured the area, and took pictures!

The latest rendering. This space was mostly empty, containing the connecting hallway to the Noth Hall, a small courtyard, and a work yard. This footprint is on top of the Lincoln Tunnel. (Note the ventilation shaft for the Tunnel to the right of the glass box.)

Street level view.  Here’s what it looks like currently (October 2016):

The view to the west. The is what was hidden behind the hallway. The two ventilation shafts mark the Pier 79 ferry terminal.

The view towards Javits. This was the hallway attendees traversed to and from Artist Alley.

The other end, at the remnants of the North Hall.

All that’s left is the entryway to the North Hall. Most likely demolished by the time the convention starts.

3 Hudson Boulevard, the next skyscraper to be built along Eleventh Avenue, between 34th and 35th. 66 storeys, 1,060 feet tall, 1.8 million square feet big, offices, but no major tenant yet.

Here are some videos from the Javits’ YouTube channel:

and… if you need some peace and quiet, the new green roof has a webcam!
