NYCC ’16: Author Richard Kadrey to take over LUCIFER with issue #13

Announced today by DC, current Lucifer writer Holly Black will be leaving the series at issue #12, and the second year of the book will be helmed by Fantasy writer Richard Kadrey.

Kadrey, best known for his Sandman Slim series of novels – of which the first was named one of the best Fantasy Novels of the Past Decade by Barnes & Noble, seems like a solid fit for the material, especially as its lead character, James Stark, was a former inhabitant of Hell wandering a supernatural Los Angeles.

Today at New York Comic Con’s Vertigo panel, it was announced that New York Times best-selling author Richard Kadrey (Sandman Slim) will take over writing duties on LUCIFER. Holly Black, the popular young adult author who has currently been writing LUCIFER, will be leaving the title in January.

“I’m both thrilled and a little intimidated to be taking over LUCIFER,” said Kadrey. “Mike Carey’s run on the series was a beautiful thing. And I love where Holly has taken the story and characters. I’m going to do my best to live up to their high demonic standards.”

Announced last month, Kadrey will join Black for LUCIFER #13 this December, with a holiday special that’s naughty, nice and everything in between. The issue is a darkly festive and irreverent ode to the joy of seasonal sin and twisted Secret Santas. Get ready for some Krampus-approved fun!

“I’ve been a fan of Richard’s since Sandman Slim and I can’t imagine anyone more perfectly suited to take up the infernal reins of LUCIFER,” says Black. “I feel incredibly lucky to have written Lucifer’s return to comics and now I feel equally lucky getting to kick back and read what happens next.”

The Vertigo panel, moderated by Jamie S. Rich, group editor of Vertigo, included Tom King (THE SHERIFF OF BABYLON), Joshua Williamson (FROSTBITE), Scott Snyder (AMERICAN VAMPIRE ANTHOLOGY) and Tim Seeley (THE LOST BOYS), with a special message from John Ridley (THE AMERICAN WAY: THOSE ABOVE AND THOSE BELOW).
