In spite of being previously cancelled, the Nimona animated movie, which is based on the graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson, will be released in 2023 by Annapurna Pictures and Netflix. The news was announced earlier today in a Tweet sent by Stevenson.

Nimona

Previously, the animated adaptation of Nimona, Stevenson’s award-winning webcomic-turned-graphic novel, was in development at Blue Sky Studios. However, that studio was shuttered in 2021 when Disney acquired it.

According to recent reports, Nimona, which would have been the first movie from the studio that would have featured a queer lead, faced internal pressure due to the depiction of a gay kiss.

Furthermore, while Nimona was cancelled after Blue Sky was shut down with issues related to COVID-19 being cited, other projects that the shuttered studio had been undertaking continue to remain in development. This includes animated projects related to the Ice Age IP, including a TV show which continues to be produced at Disney.

This isn’t the only controversy Disney has faced lately, with their previous (but now fully withdrawn) support of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay Bill” generating plenty of ire and leading to staff walkouts.

Fortunately, in spite of the shuttering of Blue Sky, we’ll finally be able to watch the adaptation of Nimona in 2023. The movie will star Chloë Grace Moretz in the eponymous role, with Riz Ahmed and Eugene Lee Yang appearing in supporting roles.

Will you be streaming it when it arrives on Netflix next year? Have you read Stevenson’s graphic novel? The Beat wants to hear from you! Give us a shout-out, right here in the comment section or over on social media @comicsbeat, and let us know what you’re thinking!
