One revelation that hit me right away after last night’s news of Ben Affleck dropping out as director of the upcoming new Batman film aka The Batman or whatever they might call it, which just piled up on top of the already distressing situation surrounding The Flash‘s lack of a director: Aquaman is still chugging along.
Much like how Wonder Woman swiftly moved through its production process with nary a peep of any of the strife that surrounded Batman v Superman or Suicide Squad, Aquaman continues to get set for pre-production, having recently held a partial cast read-through of the script, and is prepped to shoot in Australia this April. That’s a turn of events I never would have guessed.
On top of that, they’re adding to their cast, as James Wan and company are looking to add Nicole Kidman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (who you might have seen on Netflix’s The Get Down) to a cast that includes Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Willem Dafoe.
Kidman is in negotiations to play Atlanna, the mother of Aquaman. While Abdul-Mateen will take on the role of Aquaman’s chief nemesis Black Manta. The Tracking Board specifically notes that the latter beat out both Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) and Corey Hawkins (24: Legacy) for the role. It’s alright, Trevante, I’m rooting for you to play John Stewart anyway.
I cannot wait for this movie. Best cast, easily the most talented director of the line-up, and it’s Aquaman!! Can you imagine if Aquaman ended up being the best movie of this entire DC Films slate?
