New INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN Series Sees Bendis & Maleev Take Stark Global

As per Marvel’s announcement through EW this morning, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev have signed up to put a Batman Incorporated spin on the man in the suit built in a cave with a box of scraps.  International Iron Man, set to debut early next year, will feature Tony Stark at his most outwardly “futurist,” taking the Iron Man system out of New York and into the world.  Reflecting this, Marvel plans to translate and publish the comic in 20 countries around the globe.

Bendis and Maleev have previously collaborated on a successful run of Daredevil.  When quizzed about what he thinks makes Stark tick, Bendis responded:

He’s a futurist who can close his eyes and see the future and see what the world will need from him and try to make that happen. It’s very different than other superheroes. A lot of superheroes are all reaction. The villain does something and they react. But there’s something different with Tony, and that’s one of his struggles. He can close his eyes and see different version of the future that he may be able to help with, and maybe proactively do something to make that happen. It’s such a noble effort, but it’s so frustrating, because he can’t control all the variables. All of these things speak to his character and what’s unique about Iron Man in the Marvel universe, and in all of superheroes.

Bendis is currently also writing Invincible Iron Man, which is illustrated by David Marquez.  Bendis stated that you will not have to read one title to understand the events of the other, but you might get an “extra layer of icing” if you read both.

  1. Welp, this is a no brainer. Last time Bendis and Maleev hooked up I loved it. Plus, you know, Maleev. Instant pick up just for that.
