As part of The Old Guard Netflix debut, the movie has gone back to its comic book roots with 15 artists’ interpretations of the characters, a short comic-centric trailer, and a new poster in the style of the series’ first cover. Published by Image in 2017 from writer Greg Rucka, artist Leandro Fernández, colorist Daniela Miwa, and letterer Jodi Wynne, the comic follows a group of immortals struggling with their undeath across five issues. The film stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
“This is a fairy tale of blood and bullets. It is the story of one woman and there men who cannot die. Mostly. Their names are Andym, Nicky, Joe, and Booker. It is a story about time, and age, and ages, and about friendship, and love and regret.”
In the days leading up to its debut, The Old Guard Twitter account has maintained the hype. Most recently, it posted a collection of 15 interpretations from comic artists including Fernández himself, Rafael Albuquerque, Ahmed Raafat, Jenny Frison, Geneva B, Brian Stelfreeze, Milo Manara, Jen Bartel, Nadia Axel, Peo Michie, Tula Lotay, Kristal Melson, Taynera Cabral, Bartosz Kosowski, and Ken Hensly. Not only is it a dope gallery to scroll through on a pre-weekend morning, the move also provides actual fiscal support for the industry responsible for The Old Guard.

Prior to that came a trailer blending the movie itself with panels from the comic which, admittedly, is cool as hell (and, at points, even a little reminiscent of Into the Spider-Verse).
Then, there’s the recreation of Fernández issue #1 cover, with Theron as Andy. Check that out below, then be sure to check out Hannah Lodge’s review. The Old Guard hits Netflix today.
