MAY BEAT GIVEAWAY FRENZY #1: Museum of Terror by Junji Ito

As we mentioned a few days ago, Publishers Weekly (where I still edit part time) is moving offices at the end of the month, and it’s time for yet ANOTHER office cleaning, and this time YOU, dear reader, are the beneficiary. We’ll be giving stuff away every day at 6 pm EDT every day for the rest of the month. To enter in a random drawing please email beatgiveaway@gmail.com with the name of the book you are entering for.

Today’s giveaway is MUSEUM OF TERROR #1 by Junji Ito. This was published in 2006 as part of a brief but stellar line of J-horror comics from Dark Horse. Ito is best known for the utterly horrific Uzumaki, recently analyzed by Noah Berlatsky here, in which an entire town goes mad from a fear of spirals — a JUSTIFIED fear of spirals.

The current volume presents part one of his series “Tomie” in which a beautiful young girl turns out to be anything but. Ito’s work, like many top Japanese horror cartoonists, centers on body deformation, mutilation and copious amounts of blood. His work is disturbing and haunting, somewhat in the vein of a pulpier Charles Burns, or Renee French.

The deadline for this giveaway is 6 pm tomorrow, Thursday May 20, when a NEW giveaway goes up.

  1. Sweet. If there’s one thing I love more than deformed Asian children it’s free books about deformed Asian children.

    Thank you very much!!!

  2. USA (and Canada?) entries only again, I take it?

It would be great if future giveaways could say upfront if it’s limited to the USA or not, so we wouldn’t have to keep asking every time.
