Marvel’s digital doings: A massive Kindle sale and new Marvel Unlimited titles for June

6

As you may have heard, for reasons unknown, Marvel’s comics for Kindle underwent a massive and still ongoing sale over the weekend. Polygon has some picks and details. Basically you can get some of the best Marvel graphic novels of all times for under $5, including Old Man Logan for $2, Ms Marvel Vol. 1 for $1.80, The Vision Vol. 1 for $2.50 and old X-men stuff for variants of those prices.

This is really a gold mine for people who want to catch up on some Marvel stuff.

I’ve seen conspiracy theories floated about this – the comics are NOT on sale for directly on Comixology or in print – but really, the lord god Amazon moves in mysterious ways.  It seems to be a sale aimed at people buying more comics for the Kindle platform, so have fun.

I was going to recommend a few hidden classics, like Omega the Unknown by Jonathan Lethem and Farel Dalrymple, a modern classic of the Aughts, but I see the collection is out of print and has been for  along time and you can only buy the singles for a total of $19.90.  Sorry about that. However the Steve Gerber/Jim Mooney original IS available for $3.20 so SOLD!

Omega aside, there is enough good stuff to keep you reading for a while. I suppose you can hook up your Kindle app to your iPad and you’re good to go. I haven’t done that but let me try now and report back…

doot te doot

Thanks for waiting! I bought Mockingbird Vol. 1 and it opened on both my Kindle for Mac and for Ipad so i’m good to go! You can also read these via your Comixology apps, although I couldn’t’ easily get that hooked up because I have a different user name on that and…well I’ll try it later.

Marvel also announced new titles for Marvel Unlimited in June. I guess they are trying to do their own Netflix like announcements for their own Metflix for comics. Here’s what’s coming in June from Marvel Unlimited!

  1. A bit of warning for those who plan on buying a lot of those Kindle sale books: your credit card issuer may find it suspicious if you purchase a bunch in a row, as each one is a separate charge to your credit card. To get around this, get yourself an Amazon gift card, apply it to your account, then each purchase comes out of your gift card balance and won’t trigger an automatic block on your card.

  2. Most of the books on sale also just sync over to your comixology account if you have merged it with your amazon account.

  3. If you have Marvel Unlimited, the one purchase from this Kindle sale that is 100% worthwhile is the entirety of Ennis’s Punisher Max. You can get the whole run for about $25, and it’s pretty much guaranteed to never show up on Marvel Unlimited (they keep the Max stuff off the service due to Apple’s content restrictions).

  4. I’m a happy Marvel Unlimited subscriber, but I basically use it to read old stuff with the occasional new issue thrown in. They’re doing a MU solicitation of sorts now, but it only lists the newer issues. I’m kind of curious if the weekly old issues uploaded aren’t random (or perhaps occasionally based around their reading club).

  5. This was an amazing opportunity. I bought tons of stuff — old and new — and wish I’d grabbed a few more goodies before prices went back up to something closer to normal today. I feel spoiled now. Don’t want to spend $5.50 on something that was $2.50 yesterday, even if $5.50 is still less than half of regular print retail …! I guess I’ll wait for the next firesale …
