Marvel’s Civil War II Creative Team is revealed — UPDATED

2

Marvel teased Civil War II with a postcard last October, but no more information has been revealed. However, a calendar for retailers had the project as the calendar girl for April, and Lucas Siegel got them to fess up: it will be written by Brian Michael Bendis and Drawn by David Marquez, basically the current Invincible Iron Man team. While no start date is listed, Siegel speculates that May would be a good time, as there is movie called Captain America: Civil War coming out then.

Civil War, the original, was by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven and has earned a place as ne of Marvel’s all time backlist champs; and the material was sturdy enough to tentpole a film as well. The story saw Iron Man and Steve Rogers as Captain America taking sides over the freedom vs safety thing. With that conflict very much in the news again with the rise of ISIL-based terrorism, it could be a good time to revisit these themes, although Captain America is now Sam Wilson.

UPDATE: And Now Marvel.com has gotten in on the act with official comments and all:

“The fun thing about CIVIL WAR [was] that the issues involved not only divided the heroes, they also divided the fans, to say nothing of the creative people,” reflects Tom Brevoort, editor of both series. “The attempt was to craft the conflict so that each side held a valid and defensible position, so that a reader could fundamentally agree with either one side or the other, with neither being painted as absolutely right or absolutely wrong. While the issues involved are different, we’ll be taking the same approach to CIVIL WAR II.”

“CIVIL WAR was a seismic event that demanded the attention of existing fans and created new ones because it tapped into the most pressing question of its day,” adds Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “CIVIL WAR II will do the same.”

  1. So either Marquez is off Iron Man, in which case, fuck you Marvel for announcing him as the ongoing artist of a book he’s not gonna be the artist on, or they’re gonna have him try to draw both, and both books will be late, so fuck you Marvel.

  2. Well, I mean I guess the alternative is they announced Marquez as the ongoing artist for Invincible Iron Man and then were so impressed by his skills that they offered him an even higher profile gig, and he said yes. Or that Civil War II takes place in the Iron Man title, with the Iron Man team? Also just as possible as the situations just listed.

Kudos to the retailers who broke their Diamond agreements and nabbed their shipment a day early to get these calendars and leak this information. You make it harder for publishers to share information with you in a timely manner, and diminish us all.
