Yesterday, Humanoids announced that a portion of proceeds from the sales of their new graphic novel, Makhno: Ukrainian Freedom Fighter, will be donated to a non-profit organization benefiting the Ukraine. The book comes from creators Philippe Thirault & Roberto Zaghi. Today The Beat is pleased to present an exclusive preview of the new graphic novel, which tells the real-life story of Nestor Makhno, a commander of the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine and fighter in the Ukrainian War for Independence.

Here’s how Humanoids describes Makhno: Ukrainian Freedom Fighter:

In early 20th century Ukraine, freedom fighter Nestor Makhno, the son of peasants, was among the most heroic and colorful figures of the Russian Revolution, encouraging his people to find and embrace social and economic self-determination. This is his story, of a military strategist who tirelessly defied both the Bolsheviks and the Germans to protect his homeland.

Humanoids is the latest publisher to offer aid to the Ukrainian people as they contend with a devastating invasion by Russian forces. Earlier this week First Second publisher Mark Siegel launched Adopt a Ukraine Publisher, a fundraiser in support of Ukrainian comics publisher Irbis Comics.

The non-profit emergency aid organization Razom will receive a portion of the proceeds from sales of Makhno. In a statement announcing the donation, Humanoids publisher Mark Waid described how they settled on Razom:

“In the spirit of Nestor Ivanovich Makhno himself, a courageous freedom fighter who took more than once to the front lines of combat, Humanoids has chosen to donate to the organization working most directly with the freedom fighters of today.”
