LA Times Book Prizes graphic novel nominations announced

1

The LA Times Book Prizes have been around for a while but added a graphic novel category only recently. Since then, its nominees have reflected some of the finest, most thought provoking work being done in the medium, and added one of the lost important literary prizes for comics of the year. And this year’s nominees are no different::

Graphic Novel/Comics

Sam Alden, New Construction: Two More Stories, Uncivlized Books
Julian Hanshaw, Tim Ginger, Top Shelf Productions, an imprint of IDW Publishing
Riad Sattouf, Arab of the Future: A Childhood in the Middle East, 1978-1984: A Graphic Memoir, Metropolitan Books
Maggie Thrash, Honor Girl: A Graphic Memoir, Candlewick
Carol Tyler, Soldier’s Heart: The Campaign to Understand My WWII Veteran Father: A Daughter’s Memoir (You’ll Never Know), Fantagraphics

I’d say the one surprise here is Hanshaw’s Tim Ginger which got rave reviews but flew a bit under the radar in end of year lists.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony on April 9th as part of the LA Times Book Festival.

Previous winners in the category, which was added in 2009:

2014 – Jaime Hernandez / The Love Bunglers (Fantagraphics Books)
2013 – Ulli Lust / Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life (Fantagraphics)
2012 – Sammy Harkham / Everything Together: Collected Stories (PictureBox)
2011 – Finder: Voice / Carla Speed McNeil (Dark Horse)
2010 – Adam Hines / Duncan the Wonder Dog: Show One (Adhouse Books)
2009 – David Mazzucchelli / Asterios Polyp (Pantheon)
