June Sales: Secret Wars, Wytches top another good month

3

Marvel’s Secret Wars crushed it for periodical, while Images graphic novels crushed it  in June sales just released by Diamond. Secret Wars #3 was the top over all comic, and Marvel had 7 or the top 10 slots and held a commanding 15% lead over DC in both units and dollars. DC You seems to have yet to find its footing.

The other stat that jumped out at us: GN’s were wayyyyyy up for the month — like 31.35% up. Image was the reason and normally you see this kind of leap when a new Walking Dead comics out, but this time it was Wytches by Scott Snyder and Jock, along with a strong debut for Fraction and Ward’s ODY-c—and perhaps more interestingly, a month of Marvel titles, including perennial Civil War and a new Thanos GN by Jim Starlin.  Could Marvel actually be shoring up their backlist?

Image was #3 again with more than 10% unit share again.

  1. Is the pie getting bigger? Does anyone have dollar figures for the total market for each month?
I’ve spreadsheeted the monthly Diamond percentages, but I don’t know the dollar figures for each month.

  2. Why is Marvel having a 15% lead over DC called news? “DC You seems to have yet to find its footing” – is NOT the reason Marvel takes that lead; it’s only that Marvel publish more books. I love how Comicsbeat constantly try to put DC down, want to see DC fail, while Marvel is constantly treated as the hero, the winner. No one ever says a bad word about Marvel on this site.

And if Marvel has a 15% lead over DC, what’s its percentage lead over Image, Boom, IDW etc, why not report that? Just because Marvel has a “commanding lead” over some other company doesn’t necessary mean what it’s publishing is of high quality, with memorable storylines. It’s easy to have a lead when all your books are $3.99 and are in a highly-publicized crossover event right now.
