To celebrate its recent Ignatz award nomination, Heavenly Blues is returning to readers for a digital release. Original publisher Scout Comics is teaming up with Illicit Press to make this hyperbolic heist story available on ComiXology. The series is written by Ben Kahn and Bruno Hidalgo; the same team behind Gryffen: Galaxy’s Most Wanted and Shaman.
Heavenly Blues brings together a ragtag team of thieves and ne’er-do-wells to perform the greatest heist Heaven and Hell have ever seen. Through its six issues, Kahn and Hidalgo introduce readers to a Depression-era gun runner, a young woman accused of being a witch, an Old West bank robber, a drug-addled samurai and, of course, an Ancient Egyptian tomb raider.
Following its 2018 print release through Scout Comics and much critical appraisal, Heavenly Blues was nominated in the Ignatz Awards’ Outstanding Series category. Since 1997, the awards have acted as the festival prize for Small Press Expo. The award “recognizes exceptional work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression.”
“It blew me away to see Heavenly Blues nominated for an Ignatz. It’s incredible to me how the series and its cast of never-say-die miscreants have connected with people,” Kahn said. “I’m so excited to be bringing the series to ComiXology, where new readers can discover it for years to come.”
It all starts next week, on September 11. Heavenly Blues will release two issues a week for three weeks. Issue #1 is a steal at just 99¢, while subsequent issues will be $1.99 each. If you’re still curious about what you’re getting into, have no fear. Scout Comics and Illicit Press have kindly provided a preview below for your perusal. Still looking for more?
