Attention, Marvel mutant readers! The time to have your voice heard is now – or rather, tomorrow, when the X-Men Vote goes live, allowing fans to help shape the first X-Men team of the Krakoan Era.
The X-Men Vote will be beginning at 12:00am EST on January 27th, 2021, and running through 11:59pm EST on February 2nd, 2021, affording you the opportunity to cast your vote for one member of the starting roster of the first Krakoan-era X-Men team.
This is far from the first time a Marvel Comics character has become entangled in the electoral process. Way back in 1976, the United States bicentennial was entirely eclipsed by a national event of far more importance: the presidential campaign of one Howard the Duck!
While Howard may have been trapped in a world he never made, that doesn’t mean that he didn’t have a valuable lesson for us: Get Down, America! The fowl’s fateful phrase served as the foundation for his presidential campaign, which chiefly consisted of “Get Down America” buttons you could get for $1.25 (incl. postage) and political process updates in the form of “campaign bulletins” that were printed in the back matter.
More recent elections have seen some mighty Marvel mockery, as well! In 2016, the four-issue miniseries Vote Loki was published. The story, by Christopher Hastings, Langdon Foss, Paul McCaffrey, Chris Chuckry, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Travis Lanham, follows Loki as he runs for the office of President of the United States. This comic may be particularly significant moving forward, considering it seems as though the upcoming Disney+ Loki series heavily draws upon it for inspiration.
Who will you be supporting in the X-Men Vote? And, since she has retconned herself into a mutant during the events of 2019’s Gwenpool Strikes Back, is it possible that Gwen Poole is a qualifying write-in vote? Hey, if she could be a part of the West Coast Avengers, she could be a part of the X-Men! Jeff for Krakoa’s First Land Shark!
