Diamond: Comics and GNs soar in March

  1. So, are we seeing more sales for DC’s $2.99 titles when compared to the $3.99 issues?

Marvel may have a larger market share, but DC has 7 of the top 10 comics, and 5 of the top 10 graphic novels (including two new Vertigo series!)

Yay! Takio was #3! (Yes, I know… we don’t know how well it sold to customers. But that many stores ordering that deep for a kids book is amazing.)

  2. Didnt DC have 7 of the top ten comics in November as well? Prior to the price reduction taking effect?

This seems like more of a case where their books actually shipped (2 issues of GL, 2 issues of Batman Inc and Dark Knight) than a price reduction.

  3. Another thing to keep in mind is that a reduction in dollar share isn’t necessarily a bad thing for DC, since their comics (being only 20 story pages) are cheaper to produce. Their profitability overall may well be going up.

  4. I’m impressed with the Batman Beyond collection’s showing in the top 10. I wouldn’t have expected it to debut so high.

  5. Torsten,

We have only sold 5 out of the 16 Takio that we ordered.

Baffling compared to other Bendis stuff, but I guess people might not like all-ages. That saddens me.

For frame of reference, we sold out of 38 Scarlet #1s.

I have a feeling this would have sold more as individual comics with a followup collection. The OGN seems to only hurt overall sales except in the rare few cases. I could be wrong on that, but it always seems better to double-dip with a book (comic followed by graphic novel) than to just release the graphic novel.
