DC Comics Month-to-Month Sales December 2015: “And Lo, There Shall Be a Rebirth…”

26

by David Carter

Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

December was a mixed bag for DC, sales-wise. They published a whopping 94 different comics, up from 75 in November and tying the most comics in a month since I took over the charts 2 years ago. October 2014 also had 94 comics (and December 2014 had 93). However, this month they sold 300K units fewer than in October 2014, which is kind of a sign of the times.

Variant covers still drive sales, and this month gave us a glimpse into how much. Due to the nature of this month’s Freely-orderable variants (f.o.v.s), a good number of books that have had f.o.v.s in the past months did not get one this month. Most of those books dropped in sales between 5K and 7K, which gives us a good idea of how much the lower-selling titles sales are being propped up by the f.o.v. program. In some cases it’s 20-25% of their total sales.

The other big influence on this month’s sales is the “Robin War” crossover. The lower-tier titles joining in saw fairly large boosts of around 6K. So yeah, crossovers still work for short-term sales gains.

Oh, and then there’s Rebirth…

As reported here at The Beat and elsewhere in recent days, DC is planing some kind of line-wide realignment/refresh/reboot this summer. We don’t know much about it, other than what it is called, and what’s been rumored. So as is typical for this column I’m going to engage in some mostly-baseless speculation as to what Rebirth will entail.

(Note: I’m writing this based on what’s currently known about Rebirth at the time of writing this column; there may be additional information put out there in between when I submit the column (January 28th) and when it is published. Then you can all make fun of how wrong I am in the comments section below!)

From reading between the lines of DC’s April Solicitations, it would appear that May will see the final issues of all of the regular DCU books (as well as most of the currently running miniseries). This will coincide with the 52nd issues of the remaining New 52 launch titles (except for Justice League, which will be on issue 51…) and also with the 12th issues of most of the remaining DCYou titles (which will give those books two trade collections worth of issues). Which means that something it happening in June.

My guess is that we’ll see a bunch of six-issue, twice-monthly miniseries, all subtitled ‘Rebirth’, that will be presented as new, accessible versions of DC’s characters. This won’t be a reboot as such, but the line will be that these are versions of the characters that bring together all of the ‘best’ versions. So they’re not throwing away completely the New 52 versions, or bringing back the pre-Flashpoint versions, or completely rebooting from scratch again. (If you care about strict continuity, it’ll be a big mess…)

There’s also been some rumblings about aligning the comics more with their movie and/or television counterparts. No, these new versions won’t be direct copies of the other-media versions, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see, for example, Jimmy Olsen as part of the supporting cast of Supergirl, and Kara either working with the DEO and/or her origin re-written so that she gains adoptive parents and a sibling and/or taking on a secret identity and going to work for Cat Grant.

My guess as to what the Rebirth minis will be?: Batman: Rebirth, Superman: Rebirth, Wonder Woman: Rebirth, Flash: Rebirth, Green Arrow: Rebirth, Green Lantern: Rebirth, Harley Quinn: Rebirth, Justice League: Rebirth, Titans: Rebirth, Cyborg: Rebirth, Hawkman: Rebirth, Robin: Rebirth, Suicide Squad: Rebirth, Supergirl: Rebirth, Swamp Thing: Rebirth, Legion: Rebirth. (And likely a handful of others as well…)

There will likely also be a biweekly (or even weekly?) series, titled simply Rebirth, running through the three months, that will provide in some way, shape or form provide an in-continuity reason for the change. Done in the style of DC’s recent weekly books, it will be plotted by Geoff Johns and written and drawn by a rotating roster of writers and artists. It will spin out of some big cosmic event in Justice League #52, which will go on sale the first week of June, providing a nice bookend to the New 52 (which was kicked-off by Justice League #1 a week before the rest of the New 52 debuted).

Once the 6-issue Rebirth minis finish in August, we’ll get all new #1 issues for the new ongoing titles in September (exactly 5 years form the debut of the New 52 in September 2011). We’ll get ongoings corresponding to all of the Rebirth minis, plus maybe a couple extra for Batman & Superman (and maybe a Batman team-up book, Brave and the Bold style?), and then also Action Comics and Detective Comics (which may instead of launch with new #1s go back to their original numberings). Action & Detective will be over-sized books, with lead regular features (featuring Superman and Batman, respectively), and then rotating second features featuring members of their respective families, like perhaps Batgirl in Detective.

Expect to see new creative teams on all of the titles, but likely more in a shuffling-the-deck-chairs sort of way, with titles switching editors who bring along the people they regularly work with. Though there’s an outside chance that at least one or more creators normally associated with Marvel will make a jump over to DC for Rebirth. There are rumors that Marc Silvestri will take over the main Batman title, which would make sense as they’ll need a high-profile creator on Batman with the departure of Snyder & Capullo (who are rumored to be taking on something else at DC together–my money would be on either Justice League or Superman).

Anyway, as I said, this is all just speculation on my part, and I have no inside information whatsoever. I am usually wrong about these sorts of things. So take it for what it is worth (which is pretty much nil). Feel free to engage in your own speculation in the comments below.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

2 - DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE ($5.99)
11/2015: Dark Knight III #1 of 8 -- 440,234 [449,099]
12/2015: Dark Knight III #2 of 8 -- 158,188 (- 64.8%)

After a Marvel-style variant-enhanced first issue, you get a Marvel-style second-issue massive drop-off. But still, good sales so far (and the collection will sell well into the future).

And the first issue charts another nearly 9K issues this month; I’m guessing a late-shipping variant as opposed to there not being enough copies out there.

4 - BATMAN/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ($3.99)
12/2015: Batman/TMNT #1 of 6 -- 134,526

Well huh. Who’d’ve thunk it? Oh wait, once again we get a bunch of retailer incentive covers on the first issue of a Batman mini-series.

Y’know, sometimes I wonder why they even bother making up insides for these things; why not just sell a bunch of collectable covers?

5 - BATMAN ($3.99)
12/2005: Batman #648 -- 63,151 [64,760]
12/2010: Batman #705 -- 63,262

This month, instead of offering standard issue freely-orderable variants, DC decided to offer on some of their titles freely-orderable polybagged Harley Quinn variants, with one of three different versions of the variant cove hidden inside the polybag. Which as I said back in August’s column “…takes all the fun out of a typical f.o.v. and throws it on the ground and beats it with a stick until it is a pulp of depression and greed.”

So there’s good news/bad news/good news/bad news: The good news, for DC at least, is that those with the polybagged variants showed a rather sizable increase over their previous issues sporting regular variants. The bad news is that those comics which normally sport f.o.v.s but didn’t this month saw their sales drop by a few thousand. The good news on that is that for those titles we finally get a picture as to the ‘normal’ sales level sans variants.

The other bad news is that because this was successful from a sales standpoint, we get the trick again in March when DC offers polybagged variants on a number of titles, tying in to the Batman vs. Superman movie. You only have yourselves to blame.

8 - HARLEY'S LITTLE BLACK BOOK ($4.99)
12/2015: Harley's LBB #1 -- 92,266

New bi-monthly Harley Quinn team-up series, with the first issue enchanted by polbagged f.o.v.s. But good numbers for the debut; we’ll see what kind of drop-off it gets going forward, and what happens to it when Rebirth arrives.

18, 11 - JUSTICE LEAGUE ($3.99)
12/2005: JLA #123 -- 76,899
12/2010: JL of America #52 -- 48,501

Two issues shipped in December as #46 slipped from November. The polybagged f.o.v. is good for another 9K over the Looney Tunes f.o.v.

22 - HARLEY QUINN ($3.99)
12/2013: Harley Quinn #1 -- 92,153 [120,312]

The HQ-themed polybag month is worth nearly 11K more for the regular Harley Quinn.

35 - JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA ($3.99)
12/2005: JLA #123 -- 76,899
12/2010: JL of America #52 -- 48,501

We now return to our regularly-scheduled program, as the polybagged f.o.v. gain is less than 3K due to the title’s fighting off of the declines due to scheduling mishaps.

40, 44 - BATMAN: EUROPA ($4.99)
11/2015: Eurpoa #1 of 4 -- 80,721
12/2015: Eurpoa #2 of 4 -- 52,235 (- 35.3%)
12/2015: Eurpoa #3 of 4 -- 49,474 (- 5.3%)

Two issues in December, with a typical second issue drop and a slightly softer than normal third issue drop. Both are Jim Lee-less, as issue two was drawn by Giuseppe Camuncoli, and issue #3 was by Camuncoli with Diego Latorre.

47 - SUPERMAN ($3.99)
12/2005: Superman #224 -- 63,719 [65,300]

But seriously, apparently a select few of the polybagged comics contained rare hand-drawn sketch covers. So you could be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it!

No f.o.v. this month. Nice round number though.

113 - DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE COLLECTORS' EDITION ($12.99)
12/2015: Dark Knight III Coll #1 of 8 -- 24,005

As with the Sandman Overture Special Editions, I’m tracking these Collectors’ Editions for DK3 as separate items. (If you disagree, feel free to add the numbers in and do the math yourself.) These are over-sized editions with paper board covers and cost over twice as much as the regular editions. 24K for a $13 comic is not bad.

114, 119 - DC COMICS BOMBSHELLS (Digital First) ($3.99)
08/2015: Bombshells #1 -- 59,253
09/2015: Bombshells #2 -- 37,136 (- 37.3%)

12/2015: Bombshells #6 -- 23,679 (- 6.5%)
12/2015: Bombshells #7 -- 23,014 (- 2.8%)

Two issues again this month. The novelty is wearing off, but these are still quite good print sales for a digital first comic. Sales continue to track around where Batman ’66 was at this point in its run.

115, 154 - CYBORG ($2.99)

So sometime in the past month DC announced that this was always intended to be a limited series and is ending (with issue #8, I believe). Yeah, right. Believe me, if this was selling in the 40K range or higher, it would not be ending. Of course, if a lot of the series here were selling in the 40Ks, there wouldn’t be a need for Rebirth.

Not a bad percentage drop for a third issue. But it looks like DC is dropping this from a twelve-issue series to an eight-issue series. Maybe next time try launching new series whose premise isn’t so convoluted?

12/2015: Batman 66/UNCLE #1 of 6 -- 17,363 (- 15.4%)

New series of mini-series to replace the regular Batman ’66 series, which ends its print run this month. Unfortunately for DC, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie tanked this past summer.

The best-selling launch issue of the new Vertigo titles so far. Of course, this is a Sandman spin-off with a previous long-running series on its resum, and there’s a TV series starting up in January, so retailers actually have a reason to expect that some customers may want to pick this up.

Imagine that, having a new comic series ready to go when a TV series based on one of your properties launches! (*cough* Supergirl *cough*)

Final issue. Killed by the three month gap, a complicated premise coming out of the DCYou soft reboot, and the existence of the new JLA series. The Justice League concept is never going to be able to carry more than two books for very long, and since it’s been trying to carry four books with Justice League in the title, something was going to have to give.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300/400 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300/400 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the Merry Marvel Marching Society, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there is you need to contact me).

As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. Catwoman getting a new creative team due to low sales, and immediately losing ~30% of sales seems like some weird karma thing. I assume it’ll be cancelled at Rebirth.

  2. Man, those are some ugly numbers on some of these books. The trend towards a 20% loss without a freely order variant is pretty distressing also. Really hope DC can turn this around….

  3. This might be more work than you want to do, but, damn, I’m starting to itch for asterixes next to books with FOVs so that you cn glance at the list and understand the context….

I wish you hadn’t written all of that nuts pre-speculation — it was really unfocused and almost certainly wrong in many many ways.

    -B

  4. “I always feel weird, asking myself who are those people buying comics only for their cover?”

It’s more likely that some people are buying more than one copy.

  5. Like in the 90’s? Yuk! It would be really interesting to know the proportion beetween one and the other. I do think there is probably actual readers buying multiple issues -if so, why do they prefer to buy a copy with a different cover of a comics they already pruchased instead of somethign else to read, when the current market is offering so many nice differents reading experience?. But I’m pretty sure there is also a proportion of people buying an issue only for the variant, which would explian how very low selling titles see sometimes such a big jump whenever they play the variant card. It seems that there is a core number of buyers buying variant, no matter the title, but depending on the variant subject popularity.

  6. Contrarily to the 90’s ugly trends, current variants seem to rely solely on art, no gimmicky shenanigans, therefore rest of the shoulders of the artist’s fame and the low print run. I’d be curious to see how the back issue market treats those. Might be a decent investment, in our uncertain times. I think Bleeding Cool has some kind of column tracking that kind or bargain/profit opportunity, every now and then for hot items. Does someone know if one ever provided some kind of statistics on recent variants?

  7. Couple things on the FOV:

I haven’t historically gotten variants, but about a year ago Discount Comic Book Service began offering a package where if you bought all of the FOV for a given month you got them at a bigger discount. Since I was getting most of the titles anyway, I started getting those. Thus I discovered a couple things.

One is that owning the variant is great an all, but there’s this bit of weirdness of having this book and not having any way to know, from the book itself, what the “real” cover looks like. I’m actually kinda happy that the coloring-book covers are just on top of the regular covers, rather than replacing them. So in that context, I can kinda see someone buying both versions, to be able to own both covers.

Also, while I don’t follow it closely, it does seem that the FOV are increasing in value. I use ComicBase, which has its own price guide-type info, and I run a little report regularly to see which books are currently valued over cover price. The FOVs generally end up on that list. So despite the fact that they are as available as the regular books, there’s still some sort of aftermarket demand.

Worth noting I am not comparing the FOV guide value to the non-FOV version of the same books, but I’m pretty sure it’s just the FOV’s that are going up.

  8. There does appear to be some kind of shadow economy at work when s.o.p. with Shiny New Thing is for almost 65% of orders to vanish the following month.

With some of those numbers DC looks like it could use all of the #variant/lootcrate/reboot it can get right now.

  9. I’ll buy variants every now and then. More often than not, I’m just choosing one cover over another of an issue I’d already be buying, and paying the same price for it. It comes down to which cover I prefer.

There’ve been a few times a variant has gotten me to buy a book, though — basically, it let’s me give a book I’m not buying a try, and the variant cover is just the excuse. The one instance I remember of this is the Darwyn Cooke Teen Titans cover, a really exuberant illustration of the original team as a rock band; there was a decent issue of Teen Titans beneath it, and I read and enjoyed it. I didn’t continue picking up the title, and I never would have picked up the book without it, so I guess you can say I bought it for the variant cover. But that doesn’t mean the inside went to waste, which people seem to be assuming.

  10. All this is really interesting.
and Rob, you do understand that we do have to assume they don’t read the inside because, with so many people buying variants, if really a good portion of them are buying it AND read the comics they would never have purchased otherwise, why on Earth do they never stick with this new title?
The quality of the comics produced nowadays is quite good so I can’t believe that the explanation behind their (not-sticking-with-any-book is the answer, that’s why I assume they just don’t read the thing.

  11. EDIT: The quality of the comics produced nowadays is quite good so I can’t believe that the explanation behind their “not-sticking-with-any-book” is the bad quality of those comics, that’s why I assume they just don’t read the thing.

  12. @JC Lebourdais I mainly notice increases in FOV because those are the type I buy, but I am generally under the impression that all variants increase in value over time, simply due to the rarity of them.

Heck, sometimes a 2nd printing can be worth more than a 1st printing of the regular book. Which I assume is because that 2nd printing had a smaller print run.

  13. @SCARCE- Xavier Lancel – what if most of them ARE reading the books, and many of them do start reading the series, but that is being offset by the number of people who are dropping the book in general?

  14. @Glenn (and Xavier & others…): This is why December was such an interesting month, with many titles losing their f.o.v.s for the month, we can see at least what retailers were expecting to happen. And in most cases, the expectation was that 5-7K fewer people would want to pick up each title when there was not a f.o.v. I’m sure that there are some people who read a comic that they only picked up because of the variant and decide to keep buying it, but the numbers here are highly suggestive of the fact that they are greatly outnumbered by the people who are picking these up only for the variants. We’ll see again in January’s & February’s numbers when DC returns to a more normal f.o.v. schedule.

  15. Glenn: that would imply that many more usual readers are dropping reading a book than before, so that the total of the two would still make such a bigger fall than usual.
I noticed that, compared to 4 years ago, the fall beetween issue 1 and 2 is way steepe:r: 45% to 55% when it was 30% to 40% before.

  16. With so many books (and thus so many new ones) coming out, I can see where people would be jumping ship more than ever before. Heck, I’m having to pare down my Marvel list as the new series come out.

  17. Why would anyone assume people who buy variants aren’t actually reading the comics? Moreover, even if everyone who bought variants never read the interiors, what difference would it make?

  18. A huge difference !
Someone buying variants only because it s a trend, could stop doing it abrutly the moment it s not a trade anymore. A reader will have an attachement to the story, the characters, the artist that will make their departure way more difficult.

Also, having a growing pourcentage of the comics economony relaying only on cover art and not the story or inside art is not heathly. It encourages comics company to not care about it anymore (hello Dynamite ! :-P)

  19. I supposed many people are dropping series every month, because there are way too many comics out there.

Of course, if Marvel and DC start cancelling books left and right and not creating new ones, there will be massive unemployment in the sector. That’s the same trap the french are right now (ask Xavier).
