The fastest man alive’s race is about to come to an end. The CW has announced that The Flash will finish its run following next year’s 13-episode Season 9. The series, which debuted in 2012, stars Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, aka The Flash, along with an ensemble cast that includes Candace Patton as Iris West-Allen, Jesse L. Martin as Joe West, Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow & Killer Frost, and many more.

In a statement which he later posted to social media, series EP and showrunner Eric Wallace announced the end of The Flash, and thanked everyone involved in bringing the show to life:

“Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor, and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race. So many amazing people have given their talents, time, and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers, and crew over the years who helped make ‘The Flash’ such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.“

Likewise, cast member Panabaker took to social media to address the announcement and thank fans for their loyal viewership.

Since its debut, The Flash has consistently been one of The CW’s highest-rated series. The eighth season of the series ranked at #3 overall out of all of the network’s shows for the 2021-22 season. The series is also one of just a few remaining series based on DC Comics superheroes on The CW, along with Superman & Lois and Stargirl. Other series, including Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow, were recently cancelled by the network.

The live-action run of The Flash on television is coming to an end as the future for the big-screen live-action Flash is very much up in the air. The recent string of allegations and charges against actor Ezra Miller have put a giant question mark around the release of The Flash movie, and led to calls for Grant Gustin to replace Miller in the role. Flashes Gustin and Miller have famously met on the small screen in the past – could the end of the TV series lead into Gustin leaping to the DC Extended Universe? It seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened.

The final season of The Flash will debut in 2023.
