by Torsten Adair
The following is a selection of new titles due to be published in September 2010. This list is not comprehensive, as there are over 275 graphic novel titles scheduled for this month.
If you would like to browse them at your leisure, click here. Instead, I have selected titles which caught my interest. These are not necessarily titles I will purchase, but which I will definitely look at once they arrive at my local comics shop or bookstore.
Please be advised that publication dates are not set in stone. Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library. Links connected to publishers will link to the publisher’s website, sometimes to the exact title. Links for the ISBN-13 (also known as the Bookland EAN) will take you to the title as featured on BarnesAndNoble.com . I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic. If you feel I’ve neglected or slighted a title, publisher, or creator, please feel free to mention it in the comments below.
Monthly lists such as this will be posted at the end of the previous month. I will also be posting specific subject lists (comic strips, comics history and surveys, superheroes…) for each season, but these will not have a set schedule.
Disclaimer: I am employed by Barnes & Noble. This and any other posts by me have no official connection to B&N. Neither I or Heidi MacDonald receive any remuneration from linking to barnesandnoble.com . As always, feel free to send us your PR. Even better, send us some free books!

“Oz: The Marvelous Land of Oz Eric Shanower (Text by), Skottie Young (Illustrator)”
I’m of the opinion that this would be measurably wonderfuller with Shanower illustrating, but this will do quite nicely.
Hate to toot my own horn, but it feels as if one book is missing to me:

(Hope you don’t mind the unabashed plug!)
Think that Halo Jones cover coula used a bit more text on it. I mean, I didn’t even know Halo Jones wrote comic books about blonde girls called Alan Moore, did you?
//Oo/\
Why so many hardcovers? Hardcover comics are a bad idea for both aesthetic and monetary reasons. In this economy why not provide a more consumer-friendly option?
Hardcovers are great. More hardcovers, more.
In case you haven’t noticed, a lot of the books are published by mainstream or educational publishers, and they tend to do hardcover editions. The educational publishers’ hardcovers are actually library bindings, which are very durable and will hold up to many people checking them out. The library market prefers hardcovers and library editions that will last longer under fairly rough conditions. Trade paperbacks may be more cost-effective for people purchasing the books for themselves, but in the longer term, they’re not cost-effective for libraries, who can’t afford to replace worn-out paperbacks every year. We have little enough money as it is (or a zero budget, as is my case in my school library) and have to spend our money (in my case donations) as carefully as possible.
BTW, thanks, Torsten – I found several books I need to look for in my work, so this list is VERY useful!
These are mostly new titles, and most publishers now release hardcovers first. I do have a preference for herdcovers, but no dislike for paperbacks.
Mr. DeStafano, I see an October date for “Lucky”, so I will feature your book on that list. Thank you for mentioning it!
Kat Kan (if that is your real name)
What kinds of comics/books are you looking to obtain for your school library? Age range/type or material, etc, if you can break it down somewhat specifically –?
I donate books to the Center for Cartoon Studies pretty regularly, we’ve been culling our collection over the past two years and sending boxes to them for the library and/or student sales. I wouldn’t mind putting together a box for your school if what we had fit the bill and you accept book donations (we have been culling books, as well). Not sure if by donations you mean books or money (or both).
Maybe some other folks reading the Beat would care to donate something. You never know.
The link to the full list in your article is broken.
thanks for festuring the cover of “dick briefer’s frankentstein” i am getting more interest about it than any book i have done from comic fans and the comics news media –it’s exciting! the book is the first is the series of “the chilling archives of horror comics”. dick briefer really is a genius! actually we decided at the last second go with the “horror” frankenstein on the front cover rather than the “humor” franky that you pictured–though you’ll see both at once–you’ll have to wait till you get your copy of the book to see what i mean!
