Marvel has announced it will pay tribute to Stan Lee via trade dress on the covers of some of the titles to be released between December 19-January 9.
Both main covers and variant covers will feature the trade dress, although, according to Previewsworld.com, variants will receive the trade dress on a case-by-case basis.
Marvel’s response to Stan Lee’s death has been a point of interest given the mythical aspects of Lee’s story within the company and how much of a presence his public persona has in it (which was made stronger thanks to his cameos in the Marvel movies). The consensus within the comics world is that Marvel would not be the cultural giant it is, or perhaps even exist for that matter, without the co-creator of the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and the X-Men; the man who also served as editor, spokesperson, commentator, overall PR manager, and publisher for the company. In other words, Stan Lee is still synonymous with Marvel, regardless of the controversies and clashes recorded in their shared histories. He made and sold the Marvel brand.
It would be interesting to see if Marvel has something else up its sleeve to celebrate the life of the person that stood and will continue to stand as the face of the company for many decades.
Here’s a look at some of the titles that will come with the trade dress.
