Catching up with Marvel @C2E2

Marvel has released a bevy of announcements this weekend at C2E2 from the slathering of panels. We’ve got creative team reveals, brand new comics and tie-ins from Civil War II and more– there’s a lot to to be thankful for this weekend. Civil War II: Choosing Sides is an anthology story that features stories told with a host of different characters in the Marvel Universe. The story boasts a connective thread with Nick Fury appearing in a story in each installment of the six-issue mini. The anthology was revealed alongside a Nick Fury character design from Declan Shalvey (Moon Knight). The first issue ships in June and features the return of Damage Control. As you can already tell, the major theme of the convention is Civil War II, as Marvel announced another series starring Hercules with writer Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy) and artist Emilio Laiso (3 Guns). Abnett is set to explore Hercules in the Marvel Universe and what Civil War II: Gods of War means for the character. According to IGN, the character is assembling a pantheon of Gods including Gilgamesh, Beowulf and Lorelai to prevent the destruction of the Marvel Universe. This comic ships in June. Who is ready for some non-Civil War II Marvel news: this is a really big announcement that Marvel has hinted at, Loki finally has a creative team with Christopher Hastings (Longshot Saves the Marvel Universe) and Langdon Foss (The Surface). Writer Tom King (The Vision) was originally slated to write the series, but Marvel switched up the team with Hastings and Foss at C2E2. This is another comic debuting in June. The expanded Marvel Universe titles are also earning some love this weekend, but the announcements begin with The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe! original graphic novel. Good news, as the traditional creative team of Ryan North (Adventure Time) and Erica Henderson (Jughead) are returning for the story set to launch in October. Comics fans might have been perplexed when they saw Patsy Walker and Jessica Jones together in the Netflix series. However, series writer Kate Leth (Edward Scissorhands) and artist Brittney Williams (Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat). CBR shared a solicitation for the upcoming comic book. Guess when this ships…JUNE! The upcoming series will put Walker and Jones together in the established Marvel comics continuity for the very first time. Issue #7 will kick off the story line beginning in June. Julian Totino Tedesco (Thunderbolts) drew the cover of an old timey Patsy Walker cover: We almost forgot to mention that Deadpool #13 is not only written by series traditional writer Gerry Duggan, but the comic also contains writing from Charles Soule (Daredevil) and David Walker (Power Man & Iron Fist). The story kicks off a four-part crossover with Daredevil, Deadpool, Power Man & Iron Fist. That’s just about everything aside from Deadpool stuff and a huge load tie-ins, take a look at the covers below courtesy of both CBR and IGN:

  1. Given recent sales numbers, looks like Marvel’s gone into full-on desperation mode with these tie-ins.

Too bad they gave the main series to Bendis.

  2. I still haven’t removed the “secret wars” taste from my mouth, and recycled civil war II looms on the horizon. I think I can buy this event a few months after it’s over at a substantially reduced price. I’ll wait this one out

  3. This again? In the first Civil War Spider-Man’s secret identity was revealed to the world. When One More Day wiped away the previous 25 years of Spider-Man’s life, thereby eliminating the secret identity reveal, didn’t that also wipe away Civil War? Has Marvel ever addressed this? Can their continuity get any more confusing?
